S4 MHL cable no connection

[Android Central Question]

Hi I have purchased an MHL cable I couldn't find any original Samsung ones anywhere as no one seems to sell them anymore but tried 2 different brand. when i plug everything into my Panasonic TV nothing happens. the phone is receiving a charge so there is definitely a connection made. i Have tried it with the little extra adaptor on the micro USB side and without. neither has shown any life on the screen.
anything i am missing?
