S5 - can't type in my pin to unlock because keyboard is in the way

If my phone locks when I am in a text message conversation I can't type in my PIN to unlock it because the keyboard is still showing on the screen. I have tried to type in my PIN in the number row on the keyboard but it doesn't recognize that I am typing my PIN. I have to open the camera from the lock screen (I have that feature enabled) press back and then it brings me to the lock screen, at which point I can then type in my PIN to unlock it.
Of course I realize I could just make sure I exit the SMS conversation before I lock it but that's not always easy to remember. And I shouldn't have to do that.

Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it??

That's an odd problem. Try wiping the cache partition: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10404
