S6: auto brightness doesn't dim/decrease

So my brand new s6 doesn't seem to auto dim the screen brightness.

If I hold it next to a lamp the brightness will increase, as expected, but when I turn off the lamp and the room is pitch dark, the screen brightness remains the same no matter how long I wait.
However if I turn the screen off and on the brightness have decreased.
The light sensor is working. I have tried to adjust the slider in whatever position and been digging through the display settings with no luck.

I come from a Nexus 5 and I'm new to Samsung. Am I missing something or is there something wrong here???

PS: it is NOT the edge model.

+1 for wiping system cache.

Mine isn't the fastest to respond to light differences but it's also not very long.

True, it's not the fastest but atleast it works now so I'm happy.

Ok so after an hour or so I realize that my phone is doing the same trick again (almost). It takes like 10-15 min to auto dim. Notice that I'm lying in bed in a pitch dark bedroom.
Seems like a small thing but it really bugs me and I'm not interested in clearing my partition cache several times in a day. Besides it doesn't exactly help with preserving battery life.

Is anybody else noticing this? Is it normal on the s6?

EDIT: it seems the display will only auto dim when it's laid flat on its back (horizontal with sensor pointing up).

Interesting--someone else mentioned that a few days ago (unless it happened to be you as well, as an unregistered guest). My reply to that post was to ask if there was a screen protector or case, in case it was blocking the light sensor, but that shouldn't matter in your situation, since you're in a dark room.

No screen protector or case here. It is indeed interesting. And very annoying since it's one of those things I can't stop noticing now

I recall there being a rather large thread on this issue which was noticed by several people pretty early on, like last April maybe. I never use the auto brightness feature anyway so it doesn't bother me, but I tested out my phone when this was first discussed and I do indeed have the problem. Luckily it is a non-issue for me. OP, perhaps you can adjust to one brightness level or when needed just readjust it using the pull down which is probably the quickest way. You might want to look up that old thread as I also think someone had found an app that had fixed their problem with it.

That's really odd.
No issues for me and I use a tempered glass screen protector.
I've found that the auto brightness feature works really well on the S6 and Note 5.

I'm not experiencing what they describe in that thread.

My auto brightness does increase and decrease brightness as it should. Problem is that it will only decrease when laid flat on its back.
I find it really weird and annoying.

I used to have screen sensitivity issues really pretty bad, then found out the case was causing it but only on one side. Modified that side and all smooth again. I started a thread about it and a ton of others chimed in and the even stranger thing was they all had different fixes that worked for them. I guess my point being is this seems to be one of those devices with the more bizarre types of issues that sometimes can seemingly be resolved with a different fix for different phones for the same problem.
Sounds like holding it causes it then. What if you lay it down and continue gripping it?

So an auto brightness app works fine but I'm just not that much into it. I hate to have it constantly running and seeing it in the notification bar all the time is a no go for me. I like my phone clean, simple and organized.

So I guess it's rep for me if I decide that I can't live with the issue.
Is it possible that it could be fixed once we receive marshmallow or should I not keep my hopes up?

Does the brightness adjust fine and stay set when you do it manually? Personally, I dislike auto brightness on any device. The constant fluctuation is so annoying. Like you tho, I like a clean, simple and organized device. Don't care for an "always on" notification bar either. (Ditch that and you won't see that icon) Having my brightness set(80%)where I like it is part of that organization I suppose . Pretty easy to swipe down from the top and adjust brightness as needed. At my setting it's never needed unless I go into a dark room to read something on a white background, then viola, I adjust it down in a split second, done. My battery still lasts all day regardless. Doubtful marshmallow will fix it.

I had the same issue until I turned Power Saving Mode off.

With Power Saving Mode off, the auto brightness works as it should...at least on mine.
