s6 edge keeps opening epubs in google play book

So I updated my phone to the marshmallow update and everything was working fine except when I try to open any epub files from my downloads it keeps opening in Google play books app. I have multiple epub apps to open the file in but it doesn't offer me the option to do that. I reset my default application setting but that didn't work, I tried disabling the play book app and opening the file but when i did that a notification came up saying 'unable to find application to perform this action' but if I go directly on the epub apps and open a file that works.

Go to Settings -> Apps -> Google Play Books -> Open by default -> Clear defaults.

The next time you open a book or whatever it will ask you to select an app.

I have already tried that but play books isn't even set as my default. Even if I disable play books app it doesn't allow me to select another app to read with.

Best suggestion I've got then is to try installing another ePub reader; any free one will do. That should "reset" everything and allow you to select the app of your choosing the next time you open an ePub file.
