S6 just died overnight for no reason and even the phone repair store can't figure it out.

My S6 just died overnight while charging. Nothing happens at all to it when I try to power it on or when I try to charge it again - it just stays completely dead. None of the reset functions work either. When I attempt to charge it via a wireless charger, the phone does get hot but nothing happens - I'm not sure if it's just the wireless charger itself causing the phone to heat up or whether something is actually being transferred.

A phone repair place took it apart and put the circuit board onto another S6 and it doesn't turn on either, so something appears to be wrong with the circuit board itself. At this point I'm writing it off as a loss, but I'm wondering if this has really ever happened to anyone before because I've never had a phone flat out die. It didn't suffer a physical impact or have any water damage to it.

Any thoughts or other experiences? Would changing out the whole motherboard be likely to fix this problem? My goal is still to power it on and get some of the data out, but I was quoted at $500 at the local shop which seems insane for data recovery. I'm hoping I could pop another motherboard in and it would work long enough for it to power on. Does that even seem likely or practical?

That's a bummer.:( I don't think swapping the motherboard will help, because the internal storage memory chips are also on the motherboard. You'd have to somehow transfer those chips to a new motherboard, which would probably be pretty involved.

While most issues are software-related, it's not out of the ordinary for there to be a hardware failure. As for swapping the motherboard to retrieve your data note that your data is stored in a chip on the motherboard.S6_mobo.jpg

show the exact chip itself so if the board itself is the problem then that price they quoted to retrieve your files is a bargain (frankly I'm doubtful on that as most data recovery services are more pricey, but hopefully I'm wrong).
I'd probably start looking at getting a new phone than put money into this one but that's up to you of course. If you don't have any backups things could get complicated but if anything it's a lesson learned, and for your next phone be sure to set up a good, reliable backup solution. Smartphones simply are not good for long term archiving.
