Verizon Galaxy S8 s8+, it does not read incoming text messages

Just got the s8+, it does not read incoming text messages (when connected to my stereo using BT) and I cannot reply to them by voice either. I could do this with my prior phone, Windows.(lumina 735) . currently using Verizon messenger + app. previous app was also Verizon messenger not sure which version.
called both Samsung and Kenwood the manufacturer of the stereo both claim its not their product at fault...
using google assistant kind of solves the problem... it will send a text for you , but you have to tell it to look for any messages that you may have received...
as i have said with the windows phone you would get a verbal notification and it would ask what you wanted to do .... ignore, read... or reply when read...

any help would be appreciated

I came from Windows phone as well and hit the same bump. Had to employ a program called read it to me. It now reads me text via my trucks head unit while on android auto.
