S9 and + still haven't improved the speakerphone issue.

I don't have the S9...so both speakers work in phone calls, video calls? Thx
It works fine on video calls because I believe it uses a different microphone. Whenever you're making a phone call and have speakerphone on periodically it will cut out and sound very muffled.

Hmm, yeah speakerphone sounds fantastic on my S9. The other side thought I was using the earpiece. Very possible that it's a cover/case that's causing this.
Not a chance. It's a known issue that the waterproofing on the Galaxy series inhibits the speakerphone from sounding crystal clear all the time on all devices.

Wow... Samsung just stinks.... I work for a wireless carrier and I can't tell you the amount of calls I've had regarding the S8 and S8 plus speaker phone having crappy some. Sounds like the other party is under water when they're talking through their speakerphone. I'm very disappointed to see that Samsung did not resolve this issue on the S9 or plus. Disappointing.

I understand. But I come from BlackBerry world. They always have excellent speakerphones - targeted to the business user. The Passport had 5 microphones if memory serves, for noise canceling.

But that market was not big enough and now the licensees of BlackBerry name are not delivering that quality in their mid range devices and they don't make high end devices.

I have found the radio In my S9 + to be excellent however, AT&T USA.

My speaker phone sounds good to me. It's also possible that some people might be using an unlocked device and some carriers won't give you HD Voice or Voice over LTE on unlocked noncarrier branded phones. It can also be the person on the other end depending on various factors. If I join a conference call for work and the service has an app, like Cisco WebEx,I make sure to use the app and take the call through the app so it uses my Data connection or wifi for better quality calls.

This is not an issue of user error. This is about a physical problem with the device. I've tried and tested it on several different devices and it's come back to only one thing. They microphone on the Galaxy Series has a waterproof membrane over it that affects the quality of the call in some cases. I've had two different S9 plus is the first one had the issue this one has not to this point.

It's definitely a Galaxy issue. There's reports and my own personal experiences dating back 3 generations of Galaxy's at least. Plenty of phones have waterproofing so Samsung needs to figure this out. In order to do that though they need us to make enough noise to move it up on the priority list

I'm just effing amazed that it still continues on ANY Galaxy phones using speakerphone. As I mentioned previously I work for a wireless carrier and all day long phone calls that come in muffled I can guarantee that they are on a Galaxy device using speakerphone before I even see what device they are calling from.

Wow, I have the complete opposite experience with my S9+. I'm very impressed with the speakerphone (and earpiece). It's much better than my S7 was. The caller is loud and clear. I'm on Verizon and waaay out in the country!

Well you wouldn't experience the problem yourself and yes on your end everything sounds great.... The issue is if you use speakerphone how does it sound to the person on the other end of the call?

I've had the opposite experience with the S9+. On my previous S8+, the speaker phone sounded mostly adequate but never quite loud enough. It wasn't until using it directly next to my partner's LGV20 which has outstanding volume and clarity that I realize how mediocre the speaker phones on the S8+ really were. The S9+ speaker phones have been noticeably louder and clearer than the S8+ and I've not had a muddled call yet. In fact, using the external speakers for calls and for all my media use has been pretty awesome, especially in direct comparison with my previous three Samsung devices. I think the S9+ sounds distinctly better in all circumstances than my S6 edge, S7 edge and S8+.

I haven't had any issues at all on my S9 while using the speaker on calls... I've never been one to use it while making phone calls but this thread made me wonder when I read in a month or so back. So I started using it and asking people I was talking to how I sounded- Always said I sounded good except a few times when I was talking to someone driving using their cars bluetooth where they said I sounded distant. I attributed this to their bluetooth speakers since I heard an echo though.

This is not what the sound sounds like coming out of your own phone speaker. This is when you are talking to someone and you have your phone on speaker phone and they are telling you it sounds like you're underwater and you have your mouth anywhere from 18 in 2 1/2 inch away from the microphone and it sounds the same.

This is not due to a case, piece of dirt and microphone, user error or any other BS that people want to throw out there. It's a faulty microphone period.

Something mentioning something above about LTE but that hasn't done me any good. Back to I think the waterproof membrane that covers the microphone. It never happens on Facebook Messenger video chat or Skype video chat. It only happens when you're making a cellular call with your speakerphone on.

Echo? You don't have the "sound quality and effects" set to concert hall?

Nope... What I mean by echo is I can hear my voice being repeated back to me. Again, it rarely occurs and only when talking to one particular person when he's using his cars bluetooth through his speakers.

I have a Verizon S9 and it has the issue. When I try to use speakerphone the person I am talking to sounds crystal clear but they cannot hear me. If I disable HD calling it seems to work fine. As soon as I reenable HD calling, I become muffled and the person cannot hear me. I hope to think this is a software issue that they can fix because it goes away when I disable HD calling. If it is a hardware problem as milehigherik says, I wouldn't expect the problem to go away with a setting. That is unless the phone used a different microphone when you enable HD calling and use speakerphone. Does anyone know if the phone uses a different mic for HD calls?

I'm sure there is a problem if that many people are calling. I've only had my s9 for about 4 days and have to say the speaker phone is pretty stellar

No, I know exactly what you mean. I've had my s9+ since 2 days after it launched and my friend brought it to my attention that my voice was very distorted on their end and we went through tests of me moving the phone away, talking louder, hanging up and restarting the phone etc. . .until finally I took it off of speaker and the problem was fixed. And to verify that it was in fact the speaker I turned it off and on a couple more times. At first I thought it was a carrier problem because I have At&t but now I'm not so sure.

Hi original poster, the poster skiddingus (below) and other posters on another similar thread have mentioned that switching off HD calling deals with the issue of muffled sound through speakerphone use, have you tried this tactic yet to to see if this works?

Try going into 'advanced calling' and shut the hd calling off. That worked for me.

I too am extremely upset with S9 plus variant phone coming from T-Mobile. 90% of the people I talk to state they cannot hear me or that I sound muffled when using speakerphone. I heard somebody comment and say why didn't the other person that had the same issue as me not return their phone, what a joke. I did too return my phone which T-Mobile kindly swamped out and still having the same issue... of course the employees at T-Mobile do all they can to persuade you that the phone is great and it's the other person's phone etc etc, not the case. Not sure who to blame or talk about whether Samsung or the network at T-Mobile I imagine is a software issue which needs to be addressed immediately, wondering why my phone is not on Oreo 8.0 like everybody else?
