S9+ Blows Pixel 2 XL Out of the Water!!

I have an S9 and am loving it! I'm sure the Pixel is great too, but I enjoy Samsung. Any of these flagships should be excellent phones though, and all of their cameras should be more than adequate for your average user. I don't see the point in arguing for one phone brand over another unless one has major flaws. Just buy what you enjoy using and don't let hype influence your decision.
Absolutely.

I couldn't agree with you more. These are all quality, excellent phones - no contest!

These type of threads are insane... but entertaining lol

Both are great, top of the line flagship phones. They have more in common than not but what's best for you is all up to preference & may not be what someone else is looking for. It doesn't make them stupid or uninformed.
I have an S9 and love it but that's because a pure Android experience isn't what I'm looking for - I'd be happy with a Pixel 2XL I'm sure though. I've not had many of the issues that are discussed about Samsung and found all the ones I've had have been easy to use - run fast, smoothly and battery life wasn't terrible. Not saying other didn't have issues though.

Both are great, can we leave it at that?

Getting a Pixel isn't "settling".

BTW, the Pixel 2 XL's camera > S9+'s camera. I'd know because I had both.

It would have been settling for me. I know what I wanted in a smartphone and (for me) the Pixel 2 XL didn't deliver. And BTW, we have both smartphones too.

My Pixel did have major flaws. (In certain conditions), lots of noise, faded colors, and soft images. Horrible static that would come and go in video mode. A battery charging issue that, from what I've read, is typical (it charged very very slowly in my 65 degree bedroom). It has to have warmer temps to fast charge and it still didn't charge as fast as our Samsung phones. That was enough to make me trade it for the S9+.

HOLY SMOKES! I am SO glad I didn't settle for the Pixel I bought last week. It took less than a couple of hours for me to realize the Pixel 2 XL wasn't going to cut it for me. When am I going to stop believing everything I read and hear? LOL I can't think of one thing about that phone that has an advantage over the 9+. Oh wait, yes I can. There is one thing I'll miss. That's the squeeze function to bring up GA. I already miss that but it's a small price to pay for 1000x better pictures/videos, Pro mode, THAT display, Bixby (just kidding LOL). I wish I had time to sing the praises of this phone and how much better (I think) it is in so many ways. I was so hopped up about the Pixel 2 xl and it was such a disappointment in the photo/video side of things. I've learned my lesson. I've given my Pixel to my husband and honestly feel bad about it. If he doesn't like it (and he's not the camera buff I am), I'm willing to pay the restocking fee, losing the $54 for the Zagg screen protector (and buy another one for the 9+) and the upgraded cost of getting him a 9+. It may be fine for him. His "noticer" isn't as sensitive as mine ;) If the camera and display work for him, great. I even exchanged the Pixel for another one thinking I must have a defective one.

If you're on the fence between the two cameras and photography and video are high on your list (as well as the display), please choose the Samsung phone!

1000x better pictures?
Not based on you examples.
It's OK for you to prefer the Samsung.

It's been advertised all over TV

I've honestly not seen one commercial but seem to see an S9 commercial every 10 minutes since it's been available. Almost gets annoying lol

You can buy it from Google

Yes, but since a majority of people getting phones or upgrading go into their carrier's store to do so. They can't even consider the Pixel since it's not an option. Most aren't on forums like this or even know it exists to buy it from Google.

I thought you meant for yourself

You have more then 1 channel on TV?
Verizon and Google was advertising the hell out that phone

Yup, hundred+
Don't know how I missed them if that's the case. Don't pay much attention to Verizon commercials though...

Very good post! It all comes down to personal preference and to what you need to live with in a phone.

TBH if I could get the Samsung Hardware with Google's Pixel Software I'd be in heaven. I miss being able to flash the latest AOSP or AOKP ROMs onto the Sammy phones. The S9 Camera was awful to me, my sister has it and posts pictures all the time and they look fine but for a phone that is supposedly revolutionizing the camera it's not impressive. My Pixel 2 XL kills it in every camera aspect except maybe lowlight and definitely slomo. Sammy finally made the software feel speedy with the S9 and I didn't hate their UI as much in this iteration (or the S8 for that matter) but in terms of how I use my phone the Pixel has more checks. The camera is better, I don't care what people say, in my testing the Pixel is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone with their Machine Learning stuff for the camera. The battery on the Pixel 2 XL is also way ahead of Samsung. My S9+ would die around midday, like 2pm or after 8 hours, but my Pixel is usually at 40-50% around then and on weekends I charge it Friday night and Sunday night and it lasts. All other things though Samsung has the Pixel beat. Hardware is much easier on the eyes, screen is WAY better, all of the extra bells and whistles are icing on the cake. Can't go wrong with either but I think if you want the best camera and if battery life matters the Pixel is the best. If you don't care about charging your phone more and taking worse, though still good, pics then get the S9.

I would legitimately be unhappy with this. I prefer Google's design language, by a lot and can't stand the shiny glass backs or the squre camera housing, etc. I've heard a rumor that the Pixel 3 may be utilizing the all glass back, and I'm really hoping it isn't true. I don't like the look of all the fingerprints, I don't like the idea of the entire back being "breakable", it feels cheap (IMO) and looks cheap (both valueless and classless) like costume jewelry. If plastic is out as a material, then I definitely prefer metal over glass - though ideally I'd want a soft touch plastic back, especially if it feels like the Nexus 5. When people criticized Samsung's "cheap plastic shell" - it wasn't because it was plastic, it was because it was shiny. That's where the "fisher price" association comes from. Well... the glass fingerprint magnet is also shiny.

Well I think the majority of consumers would disagree as it's these glass phones that are selling the most. This reinforces to companies that this is what the public wants. I think the Panda 2XL looks good but the other ones are just boring looking TO ME. I'll be happy with an all glass back because the main reason to do that is wireless charging, and it's very convenient.

I can't go with the majority of people disagree argument because it's assuming that they're all buy it because of that one feature and which case we could say that it's because of the logo on it just as easily. Plastic also allows for wireless charging. It's been possible with metal as well for years we just haven't seen anybody do it for mainstream devices.

Nobody that's selling in decent numbers uses plastic for a flagship. Plastic phones were continually blasted in reviews. People see a plastic phone next to a glass one and I bet 9 out of 10 people pick the glass one. On the latest podcast they talked about how even though Samsung and Apple phones usually don't have the best battery life, people continue to buy them over phones that have better life. They believe it's largely due to design. You don't have to go with it, but it seems that the majority has spoken. My guess is that once they figure out the wireless charging through metal thing, you'll see more metal phones

Yeah sorry I didn't get my point across, doesn't matter

I got your point. Just think it's wrong. That was my point. I get it though, you think people only buy them because of the logo. They had to do something right to get to that point and stay there. Just my opinion though.
