S9 goes into charging mode when connecting USB C - HDMI connector

Ihave used this ebay USB C - HDMI connector many times without issue. Bought a new charging pad and wanted to hdmi my phone to my tv whilst charging. Started to work then stopped. Went into developer mode to try and control what the usb port does but no luck. Any ideas?

USB-HDMI went bad? Phone got an update that no longer supports HDMI via USB? Something in the phone itself went bad? There are too many possibilities to cover them all here in a "one way conversation".
