Anyone know what can cause sudden battery drain. It goes from 50% to 6% in seconds

That looks like a failing or defective battery. Does it happen repeatedly? If so, contact Samsung for warranty repair.

It did this a few months ago and I cured it with a factory reset. Don't want to have to do that again. No apps seem to be at fault.

Sometimes an app can but difficult to detect which.
After ruling out a cable. Charge adapter and such
Know if a reliable 3rd party battery app?
I'd try safe mode after wiping cache partition but you may need to reset the phone, and do not restore. Reinstall in groups from safest to least essential and consider whether something at least for now is safe.

That was an S7 issue. I know 5 people who it happened to (including my son and daughter). My friends battery actually swelled so badly that the back separated from the front. Samsung did "fix" it even though it was over the year mark but it took some online shaming (posting videos of the damaged phone) to get it accomplished. My son and daughter upgraded to knew phones, as did the two other people. So, Samsung might still be having battery issues.
