Sales tax?

So why did I have to pay sales tax? Does Google have a brick & mortar presence in Pennsylvania? If not, then to whom is that sales tax going?

I thought it was strange paying sales tax too. I live in Wisconsin and I also had to pay sales tax.

I paid tax and I live in NJ.

The way I understand it, even if a company doesn't have a presence in your state, they can still collect sales tax and give it to the state if they choose to.

I was about to post the same thing. I live in Rhode Island and I am pretty sure there is no Google physical presence here. They did the same thing when I ordered my Nexus One a couple years back. Then I got an e-mail a few months later stating that they had made a mistake and would refund the sales tax collected. So why are they doing it again?!

And for those mentioning the IRS... this has nothing to do with the IRS. This is a state tax issue.

What is starting to annoy me is that I figured the Nexus 7 would be released first on Google Play. I ordered the 8GB version. It costs $227 after shipping and taxes . If the Nexus 7 gets released elsewhere online first (which is looking like a real possibility) then I could quite possibly have purchased the $249 version somewhere else online probably with no tax and free shipping.

Anyway.. here is the e-mail I received from Google in 2010 regarding tax they charged me on the Nexus One.

We’re writing in regards to your recent Nexus One purchase. There was an issue with the way the sales tax was applied to your order. We apologize for this issue and wanted to let you know that Google will fully refund the taxes you were charged.

The refund will be issued to the debit/credit card used to complete the original purchase. To verify which card will receive the refund, please sign in to your Google Checkout account at https://checkout.google.com and click ‘View order’. The payment information for the order will be listed at the bottom of the order receipt.

If the debit/credit card used to complete your purchase has been closed, your card-issuing bank should forward these funds to your new account or mail a check to you for the amount of the refund.

If you have any questions about the refund, or if you need further assistance, please reply to this email and we’ll be happy to help.

When you don't have to pay the seller tax your supposed to pay it at the end of the year. Here in nj we pay no tax to amazon but were supposed to figure out the tax and file it with our taxes. I doubt many do.

States are starting to establish reciprocal tax collection agreements, so you're going to see this more often, with more online purchases.

I was initially peaved that I was charged NJ sales tax on top of exorbitant shipping rates. But I too figured that it was the fastest way to get it. I ordered day one.
Today they went on sale RETAIL in Manhattan, and still no word on Google shipments.
I just called Mountain View and cancelled my order. The guy I spoke to said he couldn't blame me, and I had a shot at getting it sooner here!
He said UPS was overwhelmed... methinks it's Google that is...

I am picking it up from Staples as well. How come you don't have to pay tax? I still do.

Delaware has no sales tax.

If your state has a "use tax" law, and you buy something from a company out of state that isn't required to charge you sales tax, you are not paying the tax to the company, but you are still legally obligated to pay *your* state's sales tax rate on those goods directly to your state's Department of Revenue at the end of the year.

I would rather report/pay the sales tax directly
to my state at the end of the year.
