Samsung 8 default notification won't turn off

I have set a notification tone for both messenger and messages. If I don't open the message then the default notification starts going off every minute or so until I open the message in either of these apps. I want to have notification on for both but I can not figure out why the default notification is doing this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Select sounds and notifications in Settings
Select ring tones and sounds
Click on Default notification sound and scroll to silent and select
