Question Samsung connection issue to wifi with no internet

My Samsung phone and tablets will no longer connect to my Quark QK_024 AIS receiver. I see the message checking the quality of your internet connection and then it fails to connect. In previous years the connection worked fine and would say connected without internet. I have read every thread I can find and tried changing all the intelligent internet settings etc. I have tried forgetting the network and starting again following power downs etc and still no success. The AIS box will never provide an internet connection, just a wifi interface intended to be used by phones and tablets. Is there any way to stop my devices rejecting the connection due to the lack of Internet access? I have spent ages talking to Quark and over 2 hours on the phone to Samsung and have got nowhere. Any help appreciated. It is a safety at sea issue for me as the AIS system identifies local shipping details that are used by chart plotter applications to indicate those that you are on a collision course with.

Welcome to Android Central forums. Just a question before we get started.

What specific devices are you trying to connect?

I searched Google for, my wifi does not have internet and my samsung device will not stay connected, and got this response.

If your Wi-Fi is not working and your Samsung phone keeps disconnecting, try these steps: First, ensure your router and modem are powered on and connected. Restart your Samsung phone and your router/modem to refresh the connections. Also, check for any obstructions between your phone and the router. If problems persist, try resetting your phone's network settings. [1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4]
Detailed Steps:

  1. Restart your router and modem: Unplug the power cords from both devices, wait a few seconds, and then plug them back in. [3, 3, 5, 5]
  2. Restart your phone: Press the power button until a restart option appears, or follow the instructions on your specific Samsung model. [3, 3, 6, 6]
  3. Check for signal strength: Ensure your phone is within range of the Wi-Fi network and that there are no obstructions between the phone and the router. [4, 4, 7, 7, 8, 8]
  4. Check for network settings issues: Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi. Try "forgetting" the network and then reconnecting, or try resetting your network settings (Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings). [1, 1, 3, 3, 9, 9]
  5. Check for Airplane Mode: Make sure Airplane Mode is turned off on your phone. [2, 2, 10, 10]
  6. Check for SIM card issues: If you are using a SIM card, try turning it off and on again. [2, 2, 11, 11]
  7. Check for software updates: Ensure your phone and router have the latest software updates. [2, 2, 12, 12]
  8. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP): If problems persist, your ISP may be experiencing an outage or have other issues with your internet service. [8, 8, 13]
Additional Tips:
  • Try a different Wi-Fi network: If possible, try connecting to another Wi-Fi network to see if the problem is specific to your router. [4, 10, 10, 14]
  • Check for network coverage issues: If your phone is in a location with poor network coverage, it might be disconnecting. [15, 15]
  • Restart your phone in Safe Mode: Start your phone in Safe Mode to see if the issue is caused by an app. [3, 3]

It sounds more like it's trying to help you restore internet, but really what is the purpose of wifi without internet, I'm not sure what one does with that type of connection.

In the meantime, there is a setting to switch from wifi to mobile data when wifi loses signal or has no internet connection. This video will help you find and check this setting.

Is this what it's doing?

Did this help?

I am trying to connect my Samsung Galaxy S23FE to a Quark QK-A024 AIS receiver. The Quark box offers a wifi interface so that you can pick up the AIS data. This allows marine chart plotter applications to show details of all shipping in the area with configurable alarms that will sound if you are on a collision course. The Quark box does not provide internet access, and my phone and Galaxy TabA8 both fail to connect because of the checking the quality of the internet check. Both devices have connected fine in the past stating that they are connected without internet.

I tried a test at home yesterday pulling the phone line out of my router and then trying to connect. My phone did the checking the quality of the internet check and then connected stating connected without internet. I didn't expect this and am at a loss as to why it will connect to my home hub without internet, but not my AIS hub. I have all the intelligent wifi settings set to off, but am still unable to connect.

I don't like this answer but I asked Google about issues connecting to an AIS system and having this fault. Gemini returned this reply that sounds like you're trying to access the internet on this device, which we know you aren't.

If your Android phone shows "no internet connection" when trying to connect to an AIS system, it likely indicates a problem with your device's internet settings or the AIS application itself. Troubleshooting involves verifying your Wi-Fi or mobile data connection, restarting your phone and router, and ensuring the AIS app is properly configured. [1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4]

It goes on to offer troubleshooting steps. Again I don't like this answer but it mentions the settings in the AIS app which sounded interesting. Which lead to me asking the question without mentioning internet. Eveny time I included internet as part of the search all it wanted to do was fix my internet connection. This answer also mentions settings/configuration but talks about the AIS system itself. Which makes more sense that it would be an issue with the AIS given both devices stopped working at the same time, these devices even if they had received updates did not receive the same updates, leaving the only thing in common being the AIS system itself.

If your Android device keeps disconnecting from your AIS system, try restarting both your device and your AIS system. You might also need to ensure your device is correctly configured to connect to the AIS system, and that the AIS system itself is functioning properly. [1, 2, 3]

Here is a link to the search. Disclaimer; I just like using this site and is not to make you feel some type of way. https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=my+android+device+will+not+stay+connected+to+my+ais+system

Is it possible to update that system?
Is it possible that system updated, causing this?
With all of the configuration talk that might be where to start by just verifying settings, whatever those may be.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for this. The AIS receiver on my boat is standalone and has not been updated for years. I have had the problem connecting in the past and then the next season it would work, without changing the AIS box which makes me think that it must be changes to my Android device.

There must be something else peculiar to the AIS box as my phone and tablets will connect to my home hub when it has had the phone line pulled out.

I am back on the boat next week and will restarting the phone and AIS box again and see whether I can get it to connect. I will post my findings in this thread. I was really hoping there was an android setting to stop the checking the quality of the internet step when connecting to a wifi hub, but I guess in practically every case the connection is being made for internet access.

While the AIS has not updated the devices have, which could put them out of compatibility with the outdated software of the AIS. Yeah it hasn't changed but it hasn't changed while everything else has. Have you ever had an app that stopped working after an update, until the app itself is updated?

Even if this isn't the root issue, wouldn't it be better to be up to date on versions and releases with this unit?

This is Quark's suggested hookup:

Note that the AIS comes from a marine antenna, not the internet. The WiFi comes from the Quark receiver (it acts as a WiFi router - or USB router, if you connect by a USB cable).

This is how mine is set up. Unfortunately my Samsung Galaxy phone and tablets still will not connect to the wifi. They start to connect, show "checking the quality of the internet connection" and then drop the connection. I have tried all available settings on the mobile devices. I have also spent hours on the Samsung Helpline and got nowhere. Annoyingly my phone will connect to my home wifi router even if I pull the landline out so it has no internet access. My mobile phone just says connected without internet, which is what it used to do when connecting to the Quark AIS.
