Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

v2.5.1.0 is only for Amend script (older ROMs), and v3.0.0.5 is for Edify script (newer ROMs). It should be stated in the ROM thread which version that ROM supports. Is it possible you've had a bad download or two? Have you tried re-downloading these ROMs?

Well, i dont think so.. could be?? but i did delete and re download the viper roms, i doubt every one i downloaded was bad you know? And yea i tried both CW just cause

This thread at XDA
[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for the Epic 4g! Permament Method! FINAL! FIXED! - xda-developers

Talks about using ClockworkMod Recovery to get permanent root. That sounds a lot like Clockwork v3.0.0.5. So I was wondering if the root is permanent.

If it's not permanent, Can I assume the method listed in the link would work with the method of this thread?

Thanks to all who provide such great support here.

That link is to install Clockwork v2.5.1.0. This thread shows you how to install v3.0.0.5 (required for newer ROMs).

If you follow the first post in this thread, that one .bat file in the procedure will simultaneously: permanently root your phone, install Clockwork v3.0.0.5, convert your filesystem to EXT4. So it's an all-in-one deal. After you're done with this thread you're ready to flash a ROM.

How are you booting into Clockwork - manual 3 button method or are you using an app like ROM Manager/Quickboot?

Also, can you post what exactly is displayed on your screen when Clockwork fails to flash a ROM?

And shot in the dark fix: in Clockwork go to Advanced>Fix Permissions.

First I need to root, what is the current recommendation?

I've found a few permanent rooting techniques, but the posts are pretty old. I figured it would be simpler to ask the experienced people, what is the currently recommended PERMANENT rooting method?

Thanks in advance.

You're referring to "Restore to Froyo DK28"? I thought I needed to root to do that (of course I don't know root from a hole in the ground). Are you saying that IS the rooting process?

And do I just do the DK28 part?

Thanks for suffering us fools.

ADB Shell?

Topic of this thread: converting your Epic's RFS filesystem to an EXT4 filesystem, allowing you to flash ROMs with EXT4 support. I strongly suggest reading through these steps at least once before starting.

Optional: you can confirm you have successfully converted to EXT4 by using the command

Code:
adb shell mount
or
Code:
adb shell df

How/what should the 'results' [be or not be] whenever I enter adb shell?

TIA,

Could you give me a bit more information on what your doing so we could point you in the right direction.

Note, to upgrade from Eclair to stock Froyo you don't need to be rooted. Rooting is only when you plan on installing a custom ROM or kernels.

What are you trying to get on EXT4/ClockWorkMod 2.x.x.x or are you trying to get on the newest EXT4 w/Edify/ClockWorkMod v3.0.0.5?

When you reboot your phone into CMW (vol down+camera+power) what is the verison of CWM your getting and is it Green and Black or Orange and Black?

Were you on Froyo when you started? What ROM did you flash?

No i was stock when I started and I didn't get a chance to flash a rom i couldn't get it to boot up after clockwork did it's thing.

Wait i rooted and flashed the DK28 so i guess i was on froyo when I started.

So you have the Clockwork with orange text now and you're on Froyo correct? Try flashing an EXT4 ROM and see if you can boot up then.

So. good news and bad news.
Good news: i Finally Got a new root. =] Truly Epic Rebirth 1.2 i downloaded the zip straight to my phone, (didn't download using Laptop) and its great!

Bad news: Quantum wont load/Restore now!!! but I'm OK cause i really like Truly Epic.

I managed to get the Viper theme on, and got everything loaded back how it was on Quantum. it was fairly easy =].

I think I'm gonna stick to theming since Switching Roms is so complicated for me.

That is very strange, I'm sorry I couldn't help you more with your flashing problem. There's a piece of the puzzle missing and I'm not sure where to look.

I'm glad you're happy with your ROM now. There are lots of great themes you can play with to change things up. Have fun :D

First off thanks to all of you, especially ragnarokx for all this great info. I'm about to start the whole process from a totally stocked, unrooted epic. I'm hoping to flash to DK28, then follow the first post in this thread. Just wanted to ask a couple of noobish questions before I start.

1) At what point should I use a backup program (titanium or mybackup) just in case things go bad. Since I have to be rooted for titanium, should I install this after rooting but before flashing new roms?

2) At any point, will I loose all my applications (paid apps), text messages, files that are saved on the phone's memory when I either convert the file systemm flash to froyo or flash a new rom?
