Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

Okay lets run down the list real quick.

1.) Started at Eclair and either A.) update.zip or Odin to Froyo DK28
2.) Downloaded the OneClockRootCWM3.zip and followed the installation steps
3.) It reboots and does a series of installs & backups and then you should be in ClockWorkMod 3.0.0.5 (orange and black)
4.) Flashed your ROM of choice (Must be one that says EXT4/Edify/CWM3.0.0.5 compliant)

Any other details, let us know...

At 3 it reboots and going directly to the stock Froyo DK28. When I go into CWM it does the install and backups. This is where I'm having problems. If I reboot here its just goes to the Samsung screen and hangs. I tried to load the viper rom but it just errors out I think it said something about not being able to read the file. I'm using the newest one 4.0.2a. The CWM is orange and black. What I'm I doing wrong.

At this point after it reboots into CWM you need to flash you ROM, don't reboot or exit CWM.

Tried again, on fresh Windows, and same thing...

Read post #1 carefully and follow the instructions to get Froyo, root access, Clockwork and EXT4.

Must be something odd about my Epic device. I have tried on two different machines now and it stops at exactly the same point always. Maybe it was just not meant to be.

One thing I notice though, in the phone's installed apps/services, is SuperUser (an icon with an android robot with crossbones). I do not recall that being there before... But I can confirm I am running Eclair 18 and also rfs is still there.

UPDATE: I'm confident I followed the steps exactly. I am going to let it run for hours this time (hopefully the USB port on the phone is receiving juice while in "download" mode.

UPDATE 2: Also in step 9, there is no "Debug EN" checkbox in my version of Odin (Odin 3 v1.61), but I figured that although the debug information would be useful (especially since it is hanging), that it should not cause it to fail.

UPDATE 3: So now I have officially bricked my phone. Odin ran for more than an hour, hung on SetupConnection and I removed the battery. Now when I power up the phone I get three small icons in the middle of the screen. a phone, a triangle with exclamation mark, and a PC.

UPDATE 4: Unbricked, with froyo stock installed, from below site..
http://forum.androidcentral.com/epi...how-factory-restore-fix-bricked-phone-13.html
Seems it was either bricking my phone that allowed Odin to do its thing, OR the re-download I did of Odin and the .tar file.

Ok - Restored my brick - ran OneClickRoot + ext4

Looking good... formatting now

I think I will install Quantum ROM to check it out and will report back. Thanks for the help

I just updated to Quantum 2.7.0 with Ext4-RFS kernel and have CWM 3.0.0.7.
I tried to install the Spring/Samsung widgets but I get Edify Script (or something like that) error. How can I get those back?

Oh so confused

Ok thanks I'll try doing that

If that works for you let me know, because I am also having the same problem, even if I go straight into booting the ROM

When I install zip from sdcard I get this screen:

ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5
Checking for ext4 partitions...
Checking /system...
Checking /date...
Checking /cache...

-- Installing: /sdcard/QuantumRomv2.5.zip

Amend Scripting (update-script) is no longer sup
ported.
Amend Scripting was deprecated by Google in Andr
oid 1.5
It was necessary to removie it when upgrading to
the ClcockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script
and update-binary) to create working update zip
packages.
Installation aborted.

Thats what it says and when I reboot system now, it hangs back at the Samsung Mobile screen...

Wrong version of Quantum. You need Quantum v.2.7.0 to work with ClockWorkMod v3.0.0.5

Paul I changed the Rom to Banzai. It looks really sleek. And all the stuff I wanted to install are already on there. Except for Sprint Navigation and Sprint TV. I was able to install them from my SD card using MyFiles. It works great now. Thank you.

Sounds great. Yes Mammon the dev for Bonsai does some nice work.

Using EXT4 on Stock 2.1?

Is it possible to just use EXT4 on 2.1 to speed up the phone. On my old Epic, 2.2 leaks were too buggy and they screwed up my accelerometer orientation and GPS. I want to keep my phone stock (I guess rooted with the stock 2.1 ROM), but increase the responsiveness with EXT4.

Sorry, but you can only use EXT4 with a custom ROM that supports it, and it looks like all those are DK28 for now :-\

Ok I am on this stage of the process:
4d) Your phone should have rebooted into ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0 after performing Step 4c. On your phone using Clockwork, flash the "prepare.zip" file from Step 3c .

After following all the steps my phone boots into CWM v3.0.0.5
is this an issue? Also how do I flash the prepare.zip? When i go to install zip from sdcard prepare.zip doesn't show up only update.zip...ive tried to install that and that doesnt work. Any help?

I'm not sure what you did but it sounds like you downloaded and used the OneClickRootCWM3.zip. Which would be the reason why your sitting in CWM v3.0.0.5. If this is the case then you should be able to flash the ROM and reboot.

On step Step 3c did you copy the prepare.zip to the root directory of your SD card? Possibly you put it into another directory by mistake.

You mean just placed in the SD card and not inside any folders? If that is the case then yes. I am running stock DK28 rooted with CWM 3.0.0.5 installed. I tried the "new procedure" and got E: unknown volume for path [/sdcard]
E: Can't mount /sdcard. I am reading through XDA now, it appears this is a common issue...any solutions?

* I am trying to flash Quantum Rom v2.7.0

** So I finally rebooted into CWM3 using "You must boot into Clockwork v3.0.0.5 by turning off your phone and holding volume down+camera+power buttons. If you boot into Clockwork using a program like ROM Manager or Quickboot, you will get errors.

A quick way to manually boot into Clockwork is to press volume up+camera+power buttons to reset your phone, then immediately hold volume down+camera+power buttons until you see the recovery screen with orange text."

It appears I never actually converted the files on my phone to EXT4....will update to let you know how the rest went.

When you boot into Clockwork using the three button hold, does it bring you to v3.0.0.5? If so you're ready to flash Quantum v2.7.

You shouldn't be using the prepare.zip method, that is the old way (as stated in post #1). I've removed the archived procedures from post #1 so nobody else gets confused.

All is well it worked with the proper boot into Clockwork.....The mistake I made was after reading this "You should be coming from Froyo DK28, and you need to be rooted + have the Clockwork Redirector installed. If you do not meet these criteria, then go to the Old Procedure below and complete steps 1, 2 & 3. After you're done with that, proceed to Step 2 of this procedure."

I assumed because I didnt have anything installed called that or knew what it was that I was intended to go the old way. Either way I got it all figured out thanks for the guide.
