Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

Is there any way to go back to my original setup after I do this?
Yes, you can flash this zip in ClockworkMod3. It will revert your filesystem to RFS as well as give you ClockworkMod2 with a prerooted, odexed system with some additional minor mods. You can alternatively use Odin to return to a completely stock ROM.

When did this pop up Ragnarokx? Those devs sure are cooking up some good stuff !

Question, it says odexed system. If that is the case you can't flash theme/add ons to this version you would have to flash to a deodexed rom to achieve this right?

Edit: I have noticed the old rule of odex vs deodexed doesn't seem to apply much anymore as I've seen some of the newer theme's over at XDA saying that they can be flashed on either version.

I update that 1st post all the time - the zip to revert back to RFS has been out for less than a week.

I'd personally recommend using Odin to flash back, but I added a link to that zip for anyone who really really really wants to use Clockwork instead.

I've noticed battery mods that are dual odex/deodex, but no themes. Which ones did you see with this feature?

No - ext4 should be in there, but I'm seeing rfs (look at the middle few lines next to /cache, /data, /system). Try running the .bat file again.

Ran the .bat file two more times & I keep getting the same output from the command prompt. Any ideas of what it might be?

Clarification on my part. You are correct I meant battery mods I've seen but NO THEMES to my knowledge.

I knew something was different when I looked at the first post because I constantly look at that for solutions to questions and I said to myself hey that wasn't there the other day... LOL! Sneaky.. :p

Ah my apologies, I was thinking of the old EXT4 method.

In the newest method the .bat file is only the first step - you must boot into the new ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5, at which time Clockwork converts your filesystem to EXT4. The next boot will be into your new EXT4 filesystem.

So put whatever ROM you plan to flash onto your SD card, boot into Clockwork, auto-convert to EXT4, and then ROM flash.

no worries, booted into clockwork & flashed the ROM .. all seems well at the moment! thanks!

please excuse Noob question:
I followed the posts, rooted, upgraded from eclair to froyo dk28, and tried the ext4 thingy. Didn't seem to work. I may be just an idiot, but does froyo already do that or is it faster/less laggy because of JIT and/or wiping device and reloading, or does Froyo DK28 have EXT4 or did my attempt at EXT4 change work?

Shortened version, I tried, how can I tell if it switched to EXT4 vs older samsung file crap?

Follow the inductions in this thread to step 7 to get an EXT4 filesystem.

when you finish running the .bat file and the phone turns on again (which means you finished step 5 from the 1st post), follow Section II part B from the http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/47860-rom-installation-handbook.html#post467549 but you should be seeing orange text in the clockwork recovery screen instead of blue. (ragnarokx pointed out that it is after running clockwork that the files change over to EXT4)

After you have the ROM flashed, if you'd like to make sure you are in ext4, connect the phone to the PC and open up the command prompt.

Using
Code:
cd C:\
move to the folder where you have the "OneClickRootCWM3" files, once you are there type
Code:
adb shell mount
you should see something like this
View attachment 5750
you can see it mentions "ext4" a couple times in there.

That's It! I hope this helps!

If you don't mind, I'm going to use your picture for the 1st post. It will help clarify the ext4 check via command prompt.

Ugh. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here... Odined back to DK28, ran the bat (successfully?) but the phone automatically reboots into that stock rom, bypassing recovery.

When I do get into recovery, I get the E;unknown volume for path...

Hrmmn. adb shell mount shows /cache type, data/type and system/type as rfs

Thx,

Did you get threw step #5 correctly as it shows in the screenshots provided in the first post? If your not getting the screenshots provided in step 5 then restart the process again. When that is finished you need to shut down and reboot into ClockWork then flash your new ROM before you go any further. This will complete the should complete the process.

did all that -- looks like it did not ext4 the system for some reason...

Came from odined (unrooted) stock dk-28 rom. Everything ran. but adb shell mount shows /cache type, data/type and system/type as rfs.

I get like 35 lines of error statements: E:Can't mount ...

Do i need to root first? Thought this script took care of that. :|

Thanks

Just ran the bat a second time. 3-finger-willy into cw

E:failed to mount /system (invalid argument)
/system may be rfs. Checking...

Filesystems need to be converted to ext4.
A backup and restore will now take place.

...

E:failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory)
Can't mount /sdcard

Ugh. Fried my 32 GB card (gotta see if i can reformat it tomorrow). But my spare 16 GB card did the trick.

Got it going now.

Thx,
