Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

I am getting ready to take the plunge and Froyo, ext4, and a custom rom. Just 1 question.. if I do a full backup with Titanium before, will I be able to restore back all of my app settings or will the process wipe my sd card? Thanks!

I did the same what you are about to do. It did not wiped out my sd card.
you can ask Ragnarokx, I believed he can give you more inf. when you get through you will have a brand new phone. TruelyEpic Rebirth v1.2

It won't reformat the sd card. My card was corrupted to begin with. After you get past step 5, when you 3-finger-willy into CWM 3.0.0.5, the system will reformat the phone's file system itself to ext4.

However, if your card has some form of corruption, the script will warn you the sd card can't be read and will halt the operation.

Really isn't as difficult as I made it seem (and pretty worth the effort).

Good luck!

There has been many cases of problems restoring apps/system settings when going from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo. Your best option is to make note of your apps before you upgrade and then redownload them once your upgraded and then do a DATA only restore.

Your SD card is left untouched.

Well, mainly I am concerned about my contacts and umm well.. Angry Birds :) I have almost 3 starred everything and it would suck to have to do it all over again hehe. Here goes!

Follow Paul's advice - after the ROM flash download your apps from the Market, and then restore data on the ones you need. I recommend MyBackup Root (make sure to backup apps+data).

**Referring to the OP

I have been flashing phones for about 4 years now, also member of many forums, public and private. And this has to be the top 5 write-ups I have read. Complete and thorough with extreme indication of knowledge. Great job....cheers to you!

you guys make this seem so complicating. first i was on the fence about rooting, then i decided to wait, then i read something and liked it so i was gonna root, then i read something else, got confused and might not root.

that was the good thing about apple products, apple handles the os, all devices get the upgrades at the same time, and the jailbreaking was simple and easy to follow thanks to dinozambas' tutorial videos

Sorry to hear that. I fully understand that things get confusing. Things were a lot easier back a few weeks ago before the new EXT4 filesystem/Edify Scripting and ClockWorkMod v3.0.0.5 were developed. Not that these made things any harder just that there are people still using the older filesystems & scripting and things are at a point right now where you have the old and the new so we have to support both sides. Fallout from this has been somewhat hard to deal with because things can get confusing at times.

If your still interested in considering trying out Froyo then I would recommend simply bypassing anything you have read or see about ClockWorkMod 2.x.x.x or RFS filesystem because those are the older/outdated methods/setups.

I would go here and read up and then choose a ROM of your likings that supports CWM v3.0.0.5 and see if your interested.

Epic Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 (Now w/Clockwork v3.0.0.5)

isnt that the thread i am in now?

also, if i do want to root, can i use stock dk28 with ext4, or do i have to use a custom rom built for ext4?

From Step #6:

Note: if you try and boot your phone after converting to EXT4, you will get stuck on the Samsung screen. You need to flash an EXT4 ROM before booting, so proceed to Step 7.

ive been trying to put the EXT4 filesystem but im stuck at copying files on to phone... its been there for well over 10mins? Has anyone else had this problem?

From Step #6:

is there a touchwiz rom? i kinda like the touchwiz skin. or something similar to it? or if i go the truely epic route, it doesnt lock me in to anything does it? i mean like wallpapers and stuff. cause i think i read somewhere about it changing button properties. but i think i also saw patches to revert the keys back to stock

Truly Epic Rebirth is very "basic" and can be customized just like any other ROM to your likings by themes and add ons.

Yes the smiley key change can be reverted back to normal.
