Wow, insane. So they are saying "indexing" is burning up the cards, and sometimes the rest of the phone. I guess the phone is trying to reorganize the SD card's files, or create source links for them in internal memory?? They also mention a preinstalled app called KNOX, which supposedly can overheat the battery, and can be removed even though its sort of hidden....

What you said made sense until @Dpham00's reminder that the phone has a temperature cut out. Unless this is not active while charging?

It should be active while charging. When I get the cooling down message, charging speeds are drastically reduced. On my note 2,it has gotten hot enough that charging was halted, I think somewhere around 125°f for the battery. I have not seen this on my note 3 yet but my note 3 hasn't gone much over 120 ever. My note 2 has gotten to 154°f

There we go then, it cuts out. 154f on the Note 2, wow.

Maybe there's a small chance that constant persistent high temperatures can lead to an internal crack, on the various models this thread covers,
- but we are only speculating. I am anyway.
I still believe that many or most of these cases were not owner neglect. Sony in the UK virtually admitted as such recently on their models, as I posted here. I guess Samsung knows exactly what the cause is, but will not reveal. It is a poor way to deceive customers.
It is not a personal injuries case, so they didn't have to pay out mega bucks, just include internal cracks under their warranty and replace the item as with any other fault.
This has gone on very long now, I don't know if anyone has received any satisfaction or replacement. I'm not reading all this thread back.:)

I've had exactly the same problem, the crack originates from the same position (top left) however it heads down to slightly above the bottom right corner... I took some seriously good care of the phone as I was waiting for the case to arrive, and I noticed the crack as I took the phone off charge, (It was lying on the bed... sigh...) but like you, I thought it was a finger mark first...

All both samsung and my provider have done is give me the run around... going to send it back to them this week to be repaired as the pen is no longer working well on the screen... Gutted cos I wanted the phone for the pen and drawing apps in particular...

Disgusted at the crappy quality of the parts, there's no comparison to iPhone quality, and the speaker is the worst on the market... :(

I think the thong that was cracked is the digitizer which detects the s pen. You said that the pen isn't working anymore right? I guess it is the digitizer that is cracked not the glass.

On October 19, 2013, I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for $349.99 plus taxes of $21.00 at Best Buy store (1087) in York, PA. At a quick glance it seemed like there was nothing wrong with it. The next day I noticed a slight refracting thin line of glare on the screen while web browsing and watching Youtube. I thought it was maybe a finger prints or something. Upon further inspection of the the phone on that day, I noticed it was a small scratch, nick, or something under the screen of the phone. It was located approximately one inch from the top left hand side of the phone toward the middle of the screen. I tried calling Bust Buy, but it was after regular business hours. With further normal use of the phone (charging, texting, phone calls, using GPS, and web browsing) I realized it was getting bigger. It began spread from top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Remind you I have just gotten the phone. I did not drop it, apply any pressure to the screen or handle it wrong in any way.

I called the Best Buy store again on during normal business hours where I purchased the phone from on Monday October 21, 2013. Thinking they would help me and it would be a easy fix. I was sadly mistaken! When calling the first time I was met with resistance. When asked to be transferred to the proper department the store put me on hold in excess of up wards of seven minutes or they would simple hang up on me. When I finally was able to talk to someone at the store they took my name and number and said someone would contact me soon. No one ever contacted me back from the store. When I called again on Wednesday October 23, 2013 they informed me it was a Samsung issue. This began them sending me back in forth between companies. Best Buy informed me it is a physical defect that is a manufacturing issue and is under Samsung's warranty. When I call Samsung they inform me that Best Buy should be the one to replace the phone or I can call Sprint and have them take a look at the phone.

I called Sprint and explained what happen they informed me to come in to one of their store. I went to two different Sprint stores and had trained techs inspect it. They explained to me that there was no other physical defect to the phone other then a the split in the screen. By this time the split on the phone was from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Charging the phone seem make the split worse. They also informed me that it could not be repaired at their store because it was to long, I would have to go through the insurance company. When I explained to them it was by no fault of my own they referred me back to Samsung. I have tried multiple time to exchange my phone for a new one or have them fix it. Best Buy and Samsung have refused to acknowledge their defective product.

I thought I was going crazy. Till I did some research and found out I was not the only one that this has happen to. I feel that Samsung is trying to sweep this under the rug. I understand that it is not as common as software defects, but it can happen. If we can all come together to make this issue known and documented maybe just maybe we would not get the run around when we call Samsung up about this issue. Their is nothing worse then when someone is telling you it is "Physical Damage" and that it is cause by you knowing you did not do anything to the phone for it to happen.

I hope this help someone. I am still going through the process of getting this issue resolved. In some of the pics it is even hard to see. You have to hold it a certain way to see it. I will keep you guys updated!!! I just pray everything works out. Still hopeful for the best.

I think it is the digitizer which cracked. I have not experienced it before but i guess that's what happened.

I wonder if some of these are caused by the phone being bent or twisted while being carried in a pant pocket. A break from dropping a phone would most likely start in a corner, or shatter a screen. But, these phones are plastic and don't have a metal back-bone. If they get stressed by being bent or twisted in a pocket, these are just the kind of cracks I would expect to see. A number of people have noticed the crack after taking the phone from a pocket. They don't say what pocket, but it is mostly us old fogies that carry our phones in a front shirt pocket or a suit-coat pocket. I see a lot of people with phones in their pant pockets. Just sayin.

This is what I've been thinking. I carry a Note 3 in my pocket in a Commuter case. I also sometimes swap to my Defender. Never had this problem, but I always make sure the phone is out of my pocket when I'm sitting down. It may be an internal flex with such a large device in the pocket.

This just happened to my husband today! Brand new S5 barely 4 week's old he took care of it as if it was a newborn. He was always a Samsung galaxy fan had every model ever made, so you can imagine how excited he was when I got him the S5 best part it was waterproof (to an extent) he work's outside alot so rain or shine he's out there ,but managed to never get it wet, like I stated he took really good care of it. Anyways we talked to 5 different reps from T-mobile and their insurance company I explained that the phone has never been dropped or wet that the hair line cracks are not from outside of the screen and it's not physically damaged ,but more than likely a software/malfunction/defect from this particular phone. I also mentioned that this is not the 1st time I heard about this defect from Samsung phones. After 2 whole hours the rep offered a brand new phone expedited shipping and half of the insurance cost. I still feel that it's not fair that we had to pay for it at all ,but I didn't want him to go without his phone. Sorry that it happened to any of you, hopefully you all get it resolved!!

How would software cause this? .... One cause is heat and if what somebody else said is true the phone going at 150 degrees before turning off. 150 degrees at a long period of time could cause it perhaps. Also it could be like the other suggestion of you (the user) twisting the phone or etc

Re: Samsung Galaxy - Cracked Screen Defect, not dropped, Note 3 & Note 2, S4 & S3

Hello from PJ in Waterford Ireland,
But I’m have the same problems with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and I’ve tried every where for help!!
I’m send you a letter I sent to a lot of different people and companies and just a few links of people from all over the world with the same trouble..

Ref: Samsung Galaxy S4, Green black Screen….

Dear Sir’s,

I would like your help, and please don’t just dismiss this letter for help, as others have done, and I need it and would be most great full,
I Brought one of your Phone’s the Samsung Galaxy S4 from the Mobile Phone company hear in The Rep’ of Ireland named Three.ie, on a 2 year contract and all was well phone was great, it did all and more than I wanted, as I am disabled and live alone in the county side I rely on my phone a great deal.
One day not long ago I was out doing my weekly shopping and made a phone call on my phone (S4) and all was well.
But how ever when I came out of the store after shopping I wanted to make another call and the phone turn on ok, like came on be hide the buttons but screen was green and black snow like screen,
So I took it back to the store which I brought it from, they told me that I had a 2 year warranty from Samsung, and that is was a fault with the phone and so all would be repaired and given back to me, But I then received an e-mail from the repair company that Three.ie use’s I would have to pay about an 170.00 Euros, and they said Physical Damage, and it is not, from the first day the phone is kept in a rubber silicon cover, I even brought all the assessors I’ll need for the S5 when it come to the end of my present contract.

Three.ie don’t seem to be interested and just want me to keep paying Euros 40.66c each month for the next 9 months even though I have no phone and they will not honor the warranty,
Can you Please Help, I enclose the Repair email I received,

Thank you and Please do reply.

Samsung Galaxy s5 same issue: hairline crack running down screen due to NO drop and NO rough handling whatsoever

Got this phone just over 2 weeks ago and I love(d) it. Best phone I've ever had. THEN today I'm woking and pull my phone out of my front right pants pocket and notice a hairline crack running from the upper left hand area of the phone to the bottom right. No one else has handled my phone...I have not dropped it...I have not scratched it anywhere....I have not ran it into any corners while it was in my pocket or hands. Needless to say I was shocked when I noticed this crack. Nothing else is wrong with the phone. NO scratches, NO scuffs, NO blemishes on the back of the case.

What I have done to get attempt to get this resolved:

I talked to Verizon. They are worthless. Offered no help whatsoever.

I talked to Samsung via their customer support number. They asked some questions and I calmly explained the situation. They claim if I send it in (via a pre paid shipping label) they will inspect it, then (if they deem it not to be physical damage by me) replace it and finally send it back to me in 9 to 11 business days.

Unlike everyone else on here. I will actually post the results of my interactions with Samsung here. Hopefully they will do the right thing. Looks like there are a lot of people who have this same problem.

Pictures of the mess I'm dealing with.

UPDATE:

So here is the sad update....

Samsung's repair partners (who aren't actually Samsung but a licensed repair company named RSI) let the phone sit in their warehouse for 5+ business days and THEN decided that the damage was not due to manufacturer's defect and made me pay $160+ dollars if I wanted the repair! So after being told by Samsung's customer support that they would honor this as a defect as long as there was no proof of other damage (which there was not) the repair team wouldn't honor that.

I even printed out the chat logs and sent that with the phone.

I am totally let down by Samsung and I wish I never got the phone.

I NEVER had this problem with my HTC androids...

As far as I'm concerned Samsung is a crooked company that doesn't give a **** about delivering a decent product.

What nobody has ever said here was the internal temperature of the device itself .... If it gets hot enough it can damage the glass which in then is your fault ...

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these issues are cause by the phone being very hot which then causes the Glass to crack on the inside

The phone was hot but no hotter than any other Samsung phone I have had. If I used the charger that came with the phone and did not over charge the phone how would it be the users fault?

You then don't charge it and take the battery out? There's plenty of reasons why the phone gets hot and charging isn't one of them unless your wireless charging it... Wired my phone stays around 96 degrees while wireless I noticed it topped at around 99 - 101. If you notice your phone getting hot stop using it....

No... Samsung refuses to acknowledge the defect.

what about the class action lawsuit? How many people do you have now?
That would be the only way to get their attention and probably the only way to protect us in the future.

Yet there is no hard proof this is a defect and not people sitting on their phones or even an heat issue which while the phone should turn off at a certain temperature the user can simply not use the phone?
