Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Oh, I know. I was just surprised that I could get even that at 1/10. I wasn't trying to prove anything about shooting at 1/20 or less. I would have had a hard time shooting that with a conventional camera without a tripod (the weight will usually induce some cameras shake due to muscle reaction no matter how still you try to hold the camera). I think the fact that I was prone and the phone is light weight actually worked in my favor. Normally you want more mass in a camera to help hold steady, but at 1/10, that weight works against you unless you are braced. I did want to show that it's not impossible though. You have to be a little lucky though.

Do you have any samples from your N1? I would like to see the comparison between the two. B2D I can see you know what you're talking about, so I don't need to explain it to you. Fact of the matter is, low light photography is very difficult with high end cameras, let alone a tiny little phone sensor. You need light, plain and simple. This is why the camera opts for a slower shutter speed, to allow more LIGHT to be taken in. There is a reason DSLRs have large sensors/lenses, to capture more light.

Don't get me wrong, phone cameras have come a looooong way, but are still not there just yet. We are getting very close to not needing a real camera, but as it stands now, especially in low light, there is no replacement for an actual camera. As I said before, the only camera that AMAZED me in low light was the Lumia 1020, but the shots I've seen are of still objects. I'm not sure how it does with moving objects and low light as of yet.

Once again, the N1 is probably better because of the marketing geeks interference (as I said, coming from the Razr, I'm ecstatic over the quality). Panasonic did that when they tried to "improve" the GF1 4/3 camera. Instead of tweaking it to make it an even better camera than it already was (almost Leica quality when you attached the 20mm 1.7 lens), they threw in more geegaws and bells and whistles in subsequent models and didn't improve the performance (adding more pixels has the same effect as here). And, unfortunately, with their current "return" to the original concept the GM1, they missed the mark once again. Not by as much as the first time around, but enough that people like me aren't going to pay twice as much for a camera that isn't substantially better, and in some ways, still worse.

What happened to the gentleman that was doing the full-on review with app suggestions, comparisons, etc?

Still working on it. It's taking forever because I'm covering a lot of topics such as the Note 3 itself, various apps reviews/recommendations, launchers, hardware accessories, as well as the camera and camera apps.

You've been writing it for awhile... I'm not going to hold my breath but I would like to see it before the next Note release.

Yeah, it's taken longer than I'd like. Lots of other things going on in my life (such as doctor's appointments, having to test other tech gadgets like bluetooth speakers and headphones, gaming mice, troubleshooting computer crashes, etc), so I couldn't work on the piece as much as I wanted to. 'm about 70% done right now, and I'm putting more time into it this week, so I should have it done in a week or so (for real this time), unless something unexpected happens again.

LOL, he is under no obligation to finish this. I don't understand how people are getting mad because he hasn't finished. He's taking time out of his day to provide us with this thorough review.

How can you tell if I'm mad? I didn't freak out on him or anything... Simply stated he says he's been writing and we haven't seen it.

Also... Yes he has no obligation you are correct... What's your point? If he keeps saying he is writing it I can simply point out facts. Also I'd like to read it out of curiosity. I don't "need" it as I have found my own tricks for good pictures.

Thanks for your concern though! :)

Your sarcasm in your previous post is what gave me that impression.

Very good phone camera. I especially get a kick out of the people who take pictures In the dark and say "see,, low light pics are horrible". How about this,, learn how to use the camera. Lol. MERRY CHRISTMAS PEOPLE. HOPE YOU CAN STAND MY HORRIBLE PICTURE.

THE BEAST,,NOTE 3. SIZE IS EVERYTHING!!!

Are you channeling Guccione and smearing vaseline on your lens? Oh wait...that's a normal low - light blurry cam shot from Note 3 I'm guessing.

A quick update. I'm still working on the article, and just to let you guys understand the scope, included are comparisons with the Canon 5D Mark III, Panasonic Lumix LX5, iPhone 4 (to establish a greater context of where the Note 3 falls among cameras in general), and some of the best camera apps available, shooting in both very challenging low-light conditions as well as well-lit conditions, with various ISO settings.

So how does the note 3 stand?

You'll have to wait for the article, but I'll say this: The Note 3's camera doesn't "suck." Some people just don't understand how photography works, the limitation of small sensors with high resolution crammed in, where the breaking point is for low-light photography, where individual companies are placing their emphasis in their products (thus having unfair expectations and misconceptions), and then there's also them not knowing about the destructive processing that is automatically applied to their photos and how to avoid it, or which apps out there gives them options to skip the destructive processing, as well which apps give them the manual controls in an intuitive and ergonomic GUI that actually make significant differences in the quality of their photos, as opposed to just useless bells and whistles (which is what most apps focus on, because the general population just don't know any better). I will be covering all of that in the article.

Why don't you include the Note 2 in your comparison then, for fairness sake?

Because I'm not doing this for a living like the paid tech reviewers, so I'm not going to go and obtain a Note 2 just to do the comparison. I only use whatever tech gadgets I own, as this is a personal interest, and I'm only spending the ridiculous number of hours (the whole article will likely add up to about two weeks' worth of full-time work) organizing it into a full article for the purpose of giving something back to the web community. I don't have to spend time doing this--I could be writing my novels or composing music or just watching movies and playing games instead.
