Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I find my Note 3 to be lacking in camera quality in most shots outside of macro mode, which almost always impresses.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Quick question for you camera buffs - Is there a way to take still shots from a recorded video? I know you can take stills while filming, but I wanted to pull one from a video a took. I remember this was really easy to do on the HTC One, but I can't seem to figure it out on the Note 3.

That's crazy. This was a feature in the note 2 that I want back.. I just tried on the 3 and it is definitely not there... It was very convenient to just take a video and then later on watch the video and take snap shots from it.

I thought about doing that, but I don't think that would be the same quality - correct? Obviously that is a quick way to get the job done, but I was looking for what my other phones have been able to do.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Just to let you guys know, I've been doing comprehensive and grueling tests of the Note 3's camera capabilities, along with camera apps to assess their performance. This is an in-depth test that's meant to push the Note 3 to the breaking point to find out just what it can and can't do, and where exactly that threshold is, and how you can identify it and stay within its limitations in your everyday shooting situations. I'll also get into what the Note 3 does well so you can use it to its strengths. I've done the tests also with professional DSLR and another smartphone for the sake of context/comparison. I'm almost finished (I've been doing it for most of the week already--full-time. Yes, I'm self-employed so I have the flexibility to do crazy things like this if I can make it work), and once I'm finished, I'll post a full report. It's going to contain some surprises and you'll learn a lot of stuff about Note 3's camera and how to get the most out of it.

Post it asap! Im not a camera whiz so im waiting for this to learn something! Thanks for this!

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Just want to post in here for the first time to say that the camera has been taking blurry pictures. I literally have to keep my hand solid with absolutely no movement in order for it to take a good picture. However, if I turn the flash on, it takes pictures clearly. This can be a disadvantage if you're taking a picture of something behind glass though.

Great news my friend, it is there....SPEN, screen write, gets the job done!

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I tried the screen write if you mean trying to capture a screen shot from a video. Worked fine on slo mo but normal video all I got was blur. Same if I paused the video to take a screen shot. Never had a Note 2 so nothing to compare to but I know there is software that allows you to do frame grabs.

If you are using S pen screen write and not getting blurry shots, detail your exact method. I am just pulling the pen and clicking on screen write when I want the still.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

It's a superb camera. It even outperforms my daughter's Nikon SLR in some lighting conditions. I never use the flash, if I need flash I expect poor results.

You have to understand the underlying principle of how video is captures, and it'll inform you of when you can get proper screenshots from a video.

See, video is just x number of frames per second of photos strung together in a sequence, and each one of these photos still rely on the basic principle of photography exposure. If a scene is dark, then the exposure time will be longer per photo, and the video recording will try to maximize the exposure time per frame, as long as within the x number of frames per second the video requires (which is usually 25, 30, 50, or 60, depending on device and the settings). Now, if you do some basic math, you'll see that the 60 frames per second which is used by the Note 3's normal video mode, allows the slowest shutter speed of 1/60, which is still slow for any kind of moderate action, so it'll definitely be capturing a lot of blurring of motion if the subject is moving around enough.

Blur in photos/video comes in two forms--camera/hand shake, and the movement of the subject. In order to be clear of camera/hand shake, you usually need shutter speed that's roughly equivalent to the focal length of the lens, so with the Note 3's 31mm (35mm equivalent) lens, you'd want to have at least 1/30 s or faster to just get rid of camera/hand shake. And to keep the subject clear of motion blur, it all depends on how fast the subject is moving. A person walking at normal speeds would likely require 1/90 or faster to capture without blur. A running dog would require much faster shutter speeds--likely 1/500 or faster. So depending on what you were shooting in your video, you get a rough idea of how fast the video's shutter speed per frame would need to be in order to capture the single frames without blur.

Now, a phone camera's video is not going to allow in-depth control over the frame rate and shutter speed as you can get from a dedicated high-end camcorder or DSLR camera, so you're at the mercy of whatever Samsung has set for the video recording. Which means, you can assume that the 60 fps of the normal video recording of the Note 3, will at the slowest, be 1/60 per frame, which isn't too bad if you're recording subjects that't moving too fast (such as a person just sitting there talking or eating). But if the subject is moving around fast enough, then you will get some blur when you try to do screencapture of one of the frames. Keep in mind that for the 4K recording, the framerate is half, so it's 1/30, which means the shutter speed per frame can drop down to 1/30, and the ability to capture clear still frames without blur will be at half the normal recording mode.

The takeaway from what I've just explained is simply this: The lighting condition and the speed of the subject's and the camera operator's hand movements is what determines if you can get a clean screencapture. If the video is shot during a bright sunny day out side, and the subjects/camera is fairly still and not running around too much, then your chances of getting a clean screencapture will be much higher.

Pause video, remove S-pen, screen write. Worked for me 5 out of 5 times I tried it....

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Still not like note 2. While watching a video you could just keep pressing the little camera icon at top and take stills from videos soo easily.. This is not the same.. Fortunately this is a feature they could add back with a software update so I am hoping.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

A few pics I just snapped about 15 minutes before sundown. Not sure why I'm posting here as I don't think those convinced that the n3's camera is garbage will continue to think it's anything better than garbage based on my pics.

I tweaked the settings for each pic, btw.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I think I may have stumbled on a solution for those who are experiencing very poor quality pictures from the Note 3 camera. I had been using a 32 GB Sandisk Mobile Ultra card, however there is apparently a compatability with these cards and the recent Galaxy line. My pics had been coming out blurry far too often since day 1 with this phone (over a month), no matter what settings I used. It had a very difficult time locking focus on whatever subject was front and center in the shot, and would only produce a crisp, detailed picture occasionally or in very good lighting with zero movement. I was coming from an S4 which took fantasic pictures overall, so this was very frustrating (they have the same camera hardware). I demonstrated the problem to a Verizon rep in store the other day, using the diplay models for comparison. Reluctantly I agreed to have like-new replacement shipped.

I then took steps last night to prepare to migrate my files and settings to the new phone. I switched to a class 10 Samsung 32gb card and moved some files from the internal memory onto my computer via usb 3.0. A few restarts and cache partition clears from recovery mode and all of a sudden the camera is focusing instantly and capturing sharp images consistantly. I don't know if this will last, but I strongly suspect that the Sandisk Mobile Ultra card was the culprit. I've read that the technology in those (cards labeled with a "U" with a "1" inside it) can cause problems with the Galaxy line, and that technically Android is not optimized to use anything above class 6. I didn't notice improvement immediately after switching to the Samsung card and still had problems when snapping pics with no card inserted. However, maybe it took a few resets and clears to get rid of whatever interference the Sandisk Ultra may have been causing. I really can't think of any other reason why my camera is suddenly better. The camera interacts closely with the card obviously, and always tries check and default to card storage.

Is anyone else who is having problems using a high speed card with U(1) rating? If so, try switching to a class 10 or lower (maybe try Samsung brand just for good measure). Good luck.

I have the SanDisk ultra 64gb and my picks come out fine. They started off bad but they seem to be getting better. Seems one of peoples biggest problem is in low light situations it seems to take longer to take the pic because it tries to capture more light which causes blur. Smart stabilization setting also requires steadier hands. Just because you hear the click and see the words processing doesn't mean it didn't take in account of that millisecond shake after the click to blur your photo. If you need that amazing photo best photo option really helps. Also a smug free lense is a happy lense

The card I'm using now is class 10 also and the camera is suddenly working great. The suspected issue is with microSD cards with additional rating of 1U (UHS technology), particularly Sandisk brand. It's interesting that Tyler also had issues initially using a Sandisk Ultra. I can't think of anything else that I changed recently. I had camera irregularities since day one, and I had always used the Mobile Ultra card until now. It was very inconsistant before. Occasioanlly it would take beautiful shots, but most were a blurry mess, especially indoors under artificial light. I have to test it some more under different conditions, but it has handled everything I've thrown at it today.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Do you really need to remove the Sandisk Ultra to test it or can you just change the camera's storage to the phone to confirm? Or maybe even just remove the SD card and let the phone store the pics locally?
