Samsung Galaxy Note 3. my phone has suddenly lost all contacts and some of my apps have disappeared

I have just removed my phone from my pocket (it is in a S View Cover) and found that the screen was showing "Samsung" and not my home screen. It would not switch off and none of the buttons would work. I took out the battery for a few seconds and replaced. On Re-boot, it took around 5 minutes to move from the pulsating "Samsung" notice to my home screen. I have many apps missing and all my contacts have disappeared. Can anyone help

Welcome to Android Central, John. Try another reboot and see if that helps. Also, make sure your contacts are set to sync.
