Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Index Service eating up my battery

Re: Index Service eating up my battery

Anyone have problems with Index Service eating up your battery?
Not sure what it is, and what's causing it to run non stop.

I had this same problem indexservice is a part of TouchWiz I downloaded nova launcher prime and it fixed the problem

I had this same problem indexservice is a part of TouchWiz I downloaded nova launcher prime and it fixed the problem

Brand new Note 4, factory-reset once it got home, then loaded Nova launcher, a brand new Class 10, 32GB Samsung EVO uSD which was formatted to FAT32 on my computer, nothing on the card apart from pictures from the camera and battery went from 100% to 15% in a few hours + very hot phone. Pulled the uSD and replaced it with a brand new Class 10, 32GB SanDisk... same drain.

Pulled the uSD card and the drain problem seemed to disappear only to pop up after a reboot. However, if I terminated the process using the 3rd party "SystemPanel" app (non-rooted T-Mobile phone), battery drain returned to normal, until the next reboot.

Reluctantly, all my PDF files are not on the phone but in "The Cloud". Rebooted and now charging to 90%+ to see what will happen.

IMHO, this is a bad Samsung BUG as it should not have these issues when installing an external uSD card. The whole purpose is to be able to use the extra storage. As for corrupt PDF files, everyone I tested was in excellent condition (i.e. able to open on my computer, my laptop and on the phone) so the idea that "IndexService" is chocking on a bad PDF file doesn't make sense. Although a corrupt PDF can cause problems there must be something else.

I have other Android 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 devices w/external uSD card support and none of them chocked or drained batteries like this Note 4 does. I am crossing my fingers that Samsung is aware of this and that they are looking at a solution to what seems to be fairly common issue based on what I have been reading.

Re: Index Service eating up my battery

I put in a brand-new 128GB Sandisk SD card before I even booted my phone and have not had these problems. I did not format mine on a computer, though - it didn't need it. Perhaps try formatting the card in the phone settings and not on the computer.

Has nothing to do with how it is formatted. It has to do with what files are on the SD card, or internal storage.

Not necessarily an issue with the filesystem per se, but with the way the superblock or inodes are written. If the index service is having an issue with the filesystem structure it could be causing this. Ostensibly the superblock would be exactly the same no matter what is writing it out, but Samsung may have a bug in the way it attempts to read it, or the like. After all a file is nothing more than some data that gets described in its inode - create time, access time, modified time, offset on the device, length, etc. Issues trying to index that information could cause some headaches. It's just a theory, and something to try.

Re: Index Service eating up my battery

I believe that the "MyFiles" app has a search feature - I believe the Index Service initially scans the device for files and indexes them for faster searches. Once the device is fully indexed, it should only run periodically for short bursts.

External storage device is fried. When I unmount my SD card, index service stops running and draining my battery. When I remount it, the phone begins increasing in temperature and the battery drains like a sieve. New storage device, issue fixed. Hope this helps others encountering this issue.

It could be a rogue file

I'm running without any external SD card and still have indexservice suck my battery.
Samsung needs to fix this. At least restrict the indexing to times when the device is being charged so that no battery is consumed. In my case indexservice waits until I unplug from the charger and then starts running.

I'm experiencing the same difficulty. Although my indexing service runs whether charging or not. Usually between 34-40%..I also have removed the SD card with no success. This really blows..:'(

Hi Guys,

I am having a T-Mobile Note4 and for long time I was having a battery drain issue. No SD Card! ~6GB internal storage free. Sync and other background are running.

Issue:
From 100% it would take 4-6 hours to < 30% for my phone and even on Ultra Power Saving mode full charge didnt last longer than 12 hours or less. I didnt give a thought to fix this as I was carrying charger everywhere and was expecting a fix from samsung which never came.

Resolution:
I following worwig's suggestion. I created a hidden folder and moved all PDF, DOC & DOCX ( I am having many of them) into hidden folder. Then killed indexservice process. its been about 3 hours and my battery is still 88% (may be from 98%). Haven't restarted phone yet to check after reboot status.

I would highly recommend you to try this and see if it works. If we keep lot of files then indexer is failing to stop but if you hide them then indexer don't worry.

Thanks

It has nothing to do with the SD card, it is the FILES that are on the SD card OR internal storage. If you pull the SD card and it fixes it, it was likely just a file or files on the SD card. A file delete or SD card format would also likely fix it.
I had a load of work files that I sync with my other devices to my Note 4 INTERNAL storage. It appeared that a number of document and/or PDF files cause indexing to run constantly. It would eat through the battery in a few hours. Pulling the SD card did nothing. I was able to change the name of my sync folder from "My Documents" to ".My Documents". Putting the period on the front hides the directory and everything in it from the indexing service. I am still able to access the files I need, and the indexing service never bothers looking at any of them. Fixed. The Indexing Service hasn't shown up at all since.

Same issue, about 80% of my battery being eaten by the indexing service. Battery doesn't last over 12hrs. I use DropSync to synchronize my documents, pictures downloads and a couple other folders, so who knows which file is doing it, and maybe it's trying to re-index every time I take a picture. This has never happened on my HTC Droid DNA, and also notably has never happened on my Verizon Note 4, only on the new T Mobile Note 4. I'd love to just disable this indexing feature and be done with it.

So renaming my Documents, Downloads, and Camera folders seems like it will cause more trouble than it's worth for any apps trying to use these folders (I'm not interested in breaking folder links for other apps, or worse, maintaining duplicate folders that I have to periodically manually move files around). I will try the .nomedia file approach and see how it works for me.

It has something to do with the SD Card all the Time, If you have older Type of SD card Get rid of it, Buy a new one

There is probably a corrupt file that the indexing service is having a problem with. Remove the card and see if it stops. If so I would back up the card and start deleting files until it stops again.
Perhaps do it in chunks of 20 and then you will know it is one of the twenty. Keep going. It is worth it. It could be the card itself corrupting the files. It is fixable either way.
Good Luck!

Just to let the group know, I've been battling the same issue for a long time. I have a Note Edge for about 4 months now. My phone has been constantly warm/hot to the touch, and it runs Index Service almost continuously. I have a 64GB card. Finally I bit the bullet and so far, Index Service is no longer a problem, and amazingly my phone is cool to the touch. Phone battery life looks much more normal now - instead of draining within 4 hours, it looks about double that at least. Here's what I did:

- Rooted my phone - it was simple enough following the online procedures.
- Installed Titanium Backup
- Used Titanium and Froze Index Service.

I was a bit apprehensive about rooting, but I think the reward is really worth it. The phone now behaves much more normally now. If I see any downsides in the next couple of days, I'll report back.
