I recently purchased a samsung galaxy s5 by verizon that is unlocked. Can it be used with cricket at all and get 4g LTE speeds. Sorry I am new to all of this.

Cricket is an MVNO of ATT which is a GSM network. Verizon is CDMA. That being said - I don't know if your phone is directly compatible, even if it's unlocked.

Do you have a friend with a Cricket SIM you could test with?

no I dont but I have a friend with Att. I can return the phone. What if I bought a unlocked ATT phone then would it work

Technically speaking, the phone has the capability of operating on Cricket's GSM network (850/1900Mhz) per Samsung's website:

FREQUENCIES AND DATA TYPE
LTE: Bands 4/13; CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev.A: 800/1900MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100MHz

The problem you might face is LTE connectivity in some places. AT&T uses LTE Band 17(700Mhz), Band 5(850Mhz), Band 2(1900Mhz), Band 4(1700/2100Mhz) currently.

The Verizon Galaxy S5 utilizes Band 4 and 13.

You'll be able to get calls, texts and 3g data.. You will not get 4g or lte data due to the different bands in the phone.. An at&t variant or an unlocked variant will get 4g and let data on cricket, but just remember that cricket does throttle the download speeds to 8mbps for 4g/lte capable phones.. Those speeds are not typical, they are maximum, typical is anywhere between 2 to 6mbps..

Might be better off going with straight talk using their cdma network/sim/CDMA code if you stick with the Verizon variant..
