Can anyone tell me if you move an app to the sd card, does it stay on the sd card after an update or does it get moved back to the internal storage like on my s5?

The latter.

Sucks that there is no quick way to discern which ones are, and are not, moved. On my Tab S (running 5.0.2) there is a convenient check-box that shows the application's current status in that respect.

On my (VZW) S7 Edge, I can find no way of confirming this without inspecting each item.
