Samsung Galaxy S7 Scratching Easily

I have a few small scratches on the bottom back of mine, think my Google card board did it. Front, including my button look new still, and I feel I abuse mine.

So you feel like the phone has a "coating" problem on both the screen and the body of the camera? Have you taken it to your carrier's store and asked them what they think? I just read an article about an S5 (with NON-premium plastic housing :p) that had gotten lost OUTSIDE for 17 months and then found by the owner. It was in the dirt, had been thru rain, snow, freezing temps, heat. It looked 100x better than your sister's phone that's been taken care of. BTW, it still worked! I'm about to think this is a troll thread.

This is all legit, I literally have no idea how it got that scratched. Her S4 from 3 years ago looks better than this.

If it were my phone and I started seeing scratches, I would immediately investigate what was causing it, and not wait until it got this bad. Sand, diamond, cubic zirconia, and certain harder /hardened metals would scratch it. This applies to the iPhone too, not just Galaxy devices.

The back glass is easier to scratch, a soft metal could scratch it.

I feel like her phone has a coating issue, which makes itself very prone to scratches. I myself am very likely going to switch from my Moto X Pure Edition to the Galaxy S7 Edge soon, so I hope this doesn't happen to me.
If your primary concern is scratch resistance, then I would advise strongly against the s7 edge. While it is more scratch resistant than the iPhone 6s, it isn't as scratch resistant as the mxpe. A pick with a mohs hardness of 6 will scratch the s7 edge. For the mxpe, you would need a mohs hardness of 7 to scratch. On the 6s, even a standard razor blade would scratch the screen. A standard razor blade is usually regular steel with a mohs hardness of 4-4.5.

Basically if a material has a higher mohs hardness than the glass then it will scratch the glass.

You can read more about mohs hardness scale here if interested

Thanks for the info. So the S7 and S7 Edge have an mohs of 6?

Well, glass, even Gorilla Glass, is still glass. Corning mixes in their special sauce when making the glass to reduce the tendency to shatter, but the overall hardness of GG is still pretty close to that of regular soda-lime glass. Now, it is still extremely hard and will resist getting scratched by a lot of materials... but.... harder materials are all around us... wee bits of stuff that with harder moh values are extremely common.

A single grain of sand (which could actually be any number of things, like quartz) in your pocket could do an absolute number on a glass display (or glass back). Even something like the end of a micro USB cable can scratch. Steel ranges in hardness from 5 to 8.5, so if it comes into contact with something with a harder steel, maybe some sort of metal bauble hooked to a set of car keys, etc.

Personally, I don't DD a phone unless I can put a screen protector (preferably tempered glass) on it. My wife's S7 is currently lacking a protector, but not for a lack of trying, I've gone through three so far and they all didn't fit (not even remotely). If (more like when) one of those scratches, it's a $10 fix.

I've never seen a phone that bad before. My S7 Edge is just about two months old and there is not a scratch on it and I have never had a screen protector on it.

It honestly looks like she mishandles the phone. I had mine off my case for a while and babied it and nothing like that even remotely happened.

I really have no idea, I just got my S7 Edge and it's impeccable with no scratches.

So after all this discussion about your sister's phone, has she given you anymore insight as to what could have happened? What does she have to say about our replies? You should be convinced by now that that is NOT a well taken care of phone.

She for the most part puts her phone in her jeans, which doesn't really seem to explain the scratches. She appreciates the responses from you guys too. I still think there's something wrong with how her phone's protection handles scratches though.

This has surly got to be a **** take. That phone has clearly not been looked after. If your sister doesn't like it buy a new one and take more care of your belongings. Or even better take it back to the shop and tell them you think the phone is faulty, I would love to see the reply you get.

It's legit and she does take care of it. I originally posted on here to see if anybody's having the same problem and to get help, so I don't really appreciate the remark. Thanks :)

I had the turbo 2 with a plastic screen, and it looked no where as bad as that(it looked nearly mint after 2 weeks) ... Even regular (non gg) glass wouldn't scratch that much in just a few days unless there was some abrasive material applied to it (whether intentional or accidental)

Yeah, I'm a go to Verizon with her and see if they can do anything about it.

Didn't mean to offend you, however the phone has not been taken care of anyone can see that. That is the point I was making, it wasn't to offend.... I hope you get the issue resolved.
