I no longer have the original cable, but the cable I have been using for several months and was working yesterday, no longer will do a fast charge after the system update. An overnight charge only charged from 41% to 61%.

Welcome to Android Central! Moved from the Nougat forum to the Galaxy Tab A forum.

The charging plug is what's responsible for the fast charging, not the cable. Are you able to see if the charging plug still fast-charges other compatible devices? If not, then try getting a replacement fast-charging plug.

The charging plug and cable work fine with my S5 and my husband's Samsung tablet. The problem started the day after the system update.

Tried this but this isn't helping. How to solve the 5h + charging time when it was charging only from 25%? It's frustrating to wait for it to be fully charged that long.
Checked the usb cable, adaptor and also my charging port. All in good condition and clean.
Any solution? Or maybe this is a permanent hardware issue

Tab A has different models and size, you should mention what model you are having.
A bad USB port could be a problem
This one can tell if your tablet is charging properly

The tab A 7, 8 inches should have at least 0.9 Amp.
The tab A 9.7 or 10.1 should have 1.5 Amp.

Micro USB port only takes under 5 minutes to replace if you have soldering equipment.
If you have Tab A 9.7 SM-T550, the USB port is on a sub connector, this one is easy to replace as soldering is not needed,
