The newer samsungs do not take sd cards.

most of the new phones seem about 256GB

What happens of you run out of space?

In my experience higher quality SD cards have been reliable for write-only purposes.

I have all of my DSLR camera SD cards and a couple of microSD's that get shelved when full and a new one is inserted. I also backup the data on them periodically to a 14 TB hard drive (in addition to storing/editing them in LrC and some also in Photos on my Mac).

Using SD cards for read, write plus, delete and os/application logging leads to fragmentation and definitely problematic in terms of reliability.

This is why all of my Raspberry Pi's have externally attached drives.
I'll be fair, that experience with SD cards is going on 10 years now. I'm sure there have been advances in the technology since. But, I also do not have a need for those cards either.
