Samsung released an update today for the Messages app that allows us to set custom notification tones for individual threads.
To assign a custom notification tone for a specific thread you have to open that thread, tap on the 3 dots, tap on notification and chose custom.

Unfortunately, it'll require a reset of the custom notification tone if the thread is deleted, but it's better than nothing!

This is an awesome option. It is nice to see that there is another option for not having to look at your phone and killing the battery by using this.

I'm not showing there's an update available. what version of the app do you currently have then? I have 50.11.8

you can download it at APK mirror if don't want to wait for the roll out

Oh Thank You Lucianus & Mustang! My Message App was still at the factory version, 5.0.00.136. When I checked for updates the response was 'The latest version is already installed.' I guess it just ignored the nine updates after 5.0.00.136. :( It also didn't show up on my s9+ in Galaxy Apps. I downloaded version 5.0.21.18 from APK mirror. Love the new notification feature. Thanks for the all the info! :D

That's because it's linked to the thread, just like how Google Messenger has it. The old version of the contact notifications by Samsung got broke in the Oreo update when Google altered the way notifications are handled by the OS itself, making the old code by Samsung unusable. The old version has the notification tone dictated by the contacts app, not the messenger app. Samsung thus removed the feature.

I'm guessing, but maybe they tried to find how to implement the old way back but can't find any so they just went with the same method other SMS apps do it (on a per thread basis).

or you can just use textra or something similar to set them and be done

The problem I found with Textra and Samsung phones moving forward is that you can't use Enhanced Messages by Samsung using Textra. This is basically going around MMS and uses Samsung servers to send full res photos and vids. Unless you're in the US, in which case the carriers disable this. I'm not. So LOL.
