Samsung S5 Green Screen/Water Damage

Hey guys,

Last month I was travelling around Mexico with friends. I had my S5 with me and I was using it to take photos and videos of our adventures.

At one point during my travels I dropped my S5 and I cracked the screen, not very badly but it had two clear cracks along the screen but was still fully functional. A couple of days later I was taking photos in the sea and my phone was submerged for a short period of time (stupid I know).

I thought nothing of it and carried on with the day. Later I noticed that my screen was not coming on when I was clicking the power button/home button. So I took my battery out and put it back in, the device booted and stayed on for a few minutes before shutting off again. At this point I remembered about taking the device into the sea and I immediately took it apart and put the phone in a bag of rice.

Two days later I removed the phone and proceeded to turn the phone on, it successfully booted but the screen was now all green and practically unusable.

My question to you all, is the entire screen and LCD etc damaged? Will I need to replace all elements of the screen to return it to full working order?

Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forums at Android Central! 🙋

Sorry about your phone, I also have the GS5 and love it and would hate to have it broken.
I hope the trip to my country was very good though.

Do you have insurance on that phone?

If not, you could get a replacement display from different sources, check ebay and amazon.

Here's a link to ifixit so you could see and learn more about replacing the display.

Good luck, and don't forget to get back to us and let us know how it goes. 🙋

Hey STARGATE,

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have warranty unfortunately. I doubt this is something Samsung would fix for free, correct? I did take a look at ifixit and other websites which offer phone repairs and parts. Will buying the "Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Assembly (LCD, Digitizer/Front Panel)" include a brand new glass screen also? I'd be happy to try and install one myself but will I need a heat gun too?

Thanks.

p.s Mexico was beautiful.

It sounds like the only thing you need is the display itself.

Locally here at home, it was priced to me at about $200 for a G4. The S5 might be a bit more.

If you are handy, you can do it yourself. But you need some very tiny screwdrivers to work with.

Does that include the digitizer?

How can you be sure there has not been additional water damage to the phone beyond the screen? I would take it apart and check before ordering parts you may get stuck with.
