only certain files are greyed out and I don't know why any are not accessible since it's never happened before.

Welcome to Android Central! Where are those file located? Are they all in one particular directory, or perhaps all located on an SD card? What are you trying to attach it to -- a text message? If these are all image files, what format are they in?
