Hi,
Just received a video from my son. It would not play.
I discovered that the Samsung Video Player on my phone is disabled and there is NO enable button.
I reinstalled and reinstalled after booting, however same issue.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you. Marie

What happens when you try to play the video?
What's the video's file type? (AVI, mp4, mpeg, MKV, etc.)

I tried again and it played. However Video Player is still disabled. it was very small and grainy. The extension was 3gpp nothing more.
Could this have anything to do with the fact it came from an iPhone? On my son's iphone it was full screen and beautiful. Thank you. Marie

Thank you, scottbeamer. VLC played it the same way.
I am going to send it to a friend who has an iPhone and see how it shows for her.
I must have a setting wrong some where.

Marie, did he send it to you in a message (not email)? If so, then it was likely downscaled to meet carrier file size requirements for sending MMS, which resulted in lower quality on your end.

Yes he did. I remember reading about that, but it was really downscaled and we have same carrier. Will let him know.
Thanks everyone for the help.
Marie

I guess after talking to my son, and explaining carrier downscaling... not the case in all situations. Videos he sends iPhone to iPhone via text msg are NOT downscaled and my Grandson proved it with same video. Has to be a Samsung issue.
I appreciate all the help.
Thank you all. Marie

It's still a carrier issue. Text/MMS messages sent between iPhones are sent over iMessage.

Yes iPhone to iPhone uses iMessage and it is not scaled down. I wish Android had something similar but they really don't yet. Either have him email it or use Facebook messenger or something.

We will. RCS is going to make iMessage look like yesterday's fish wrapper. Not only full-size, un-scaled-down files, but Direct Client to Client transmission - no carrier needed (for the file transfer - you'll still need carriers for the initial handshake - but maybe not even that eventually). That means, if you have the patience, sending someone a 2GB update file phone to phone, something iMessage doesn't do.

At this time, RCS and iMessage support messages up to 10 MB, but iMessage offers end to end encryption for messages sent between iMessage users. There are no plans at present to support encryption over RCS.

Edit: at least that’s what I’ve just read in the T-Mobile support forums.

T-Mobile, First to Launch RCS, Continues to Lead Messaging Evolution

A friend of mine sent me a 3gpp video file, completely refused to do anything. It was 2mb and he has a Verizon phone and I have TMobile. He sent it to me on my Google voice number so the issue is on his end. The whole messaging is a GIANT mess on android. For video files I started using samsungs link sharing app. bypasses the whole issue. Just won't show it inline.

Dookie, The video came from an iPhone to my Samsung S9. We have agreed to share via email.
Thank you everyone for the help.
