Samsung Messages custom notification settings can be found in Messages, contact's text message settings, where you also change the sound: (so go to a text you've sent to, or received from someone, and settings)

that app has some very good diagnostic tools contained in it. I've found it very useful just to work through all those diag tests to get a great feel for what's going on under the hood
