I was looking at a photo on my s22. I accidently touchd or swiped and a Grey screen covered it up when I go to the photo it shows up for a split second then gets covered up. The next photo now has what looks like a street a baracade at the bottom. When I rebooted, it went away but later reappeared.

Welcome to Android Central forums.

What app are you using to view these photos?

Have you tried viewing them with a different app? What is the result when you do?

Are they save locally on the device or in the cloud somewhere? I'm thinking like a backup location, Google Photos, Samsung Backup, like that.

We really cannot do much to help you or offer advice without active replies. Without trying to guess too much I just searched, my gallery app is showing a traffic barricade icon, and got the following reply.

A traffic barricade icon in your gallery app typically indicates that the application doesn't have permission to access photos and videos on your device. This can happen if you haven't explicitly granted the app permission to access your storage or if a previous denial of access has been set. [1, 1, 2, 2]
Here's how to fix it:

  1. Check Permissions:
    • Go to your device's Settings.
    • Find the Apps or App Manager section. [1, 2, 3]
    • Locate your Gallery app (or the app you are using for viewing photos).
    • Tap on Permissions.
    • Ensure that the "Photos and videos" (or similar) permission is set to "Allow" or "Always allow". [1, 1, 2, 2]
  2. Grant Required App Permissions:
    • If the gallery app isn't showing the photos, ensure it has the necessary permissions to access your device's storage. [2, 2]
    • You may need to go to your device's Settings, then Apps, and select the specific app that's causing issues. [1, 1, 2, 2]
    • Look for permissions related to storage or photos and videos and grant them. [1, 1, 2, 2]
  3. Reinstall or Enable the App:
    • If the app is disabled, you may need to reinstall it or enable it from the Google Play Store. [3, 3]
    • If you can't find the app, try searching for it in the Play Store. [3, 3]
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the traffic barricade icon and access your photos and videos in the gallery app. [1, 2]

Otherwise it's just guesses. Let us know what you find.

The way you've phrased that...

"I can see all the other photos just fine with anything." Do you mean that you can see the photos in question fine when using Google Photos, let's say, or do you mean that you can see the photos that are viewable in the Gallery app just the same in another app, like Google Photos, but the questionable images are still missing or damaged in both? Please clarify what images are viewable and what photos are not, in each of the different apps.

For instance,
In the Gallery app, these photos are as described, grey boxes or whatever, but in GPhotos I'm able to see every image. OR the same photos that I'm not able to see in the Gallery app are still not visible in other apps, like GPhotos?

In the meantime, I searched this, older images on my android device show up with an overlay when attempting to view them in Samsung Gallery app but not newer ones, and got this response.

The screen overlay issue with older images in Samsung Gallery may be caused by an app interfering with image display. To resolve this, you can try disabling overlay permissions for apps that may be causing the issue or clearing the Gallery app's cache. [1, 2, 3]

It goes on to step by step you through how to identify and disable an app that might be responsible for this.

I went on to ask about the barricade icons using this search, why would some older images in Samsung Gallery have traffic barricades shown on the thumbnail, and got this response.

The appearance of traffic barricade-like images on the thumbnails of older images in the Samsung Gallery app is likely due to a bug or software issue related to how the app displays certain image types or formats. These "barricade" symbols can also be a visual indication of a file that is corrupted or cannot be properly displayed. [1, 2]
Here's why this might be happening: [1, 1]

This makes sense and so far you haven't mentioned doing anything to attempt to fix the app. My first suggestion would be to clear the cache for the app. To do this navigate to Settings>Apps>Gallery>Storage>Clear app cache. If you test the condition after this action and it still appears to have these symptoms I would recommend clearing the app data as well. In an app like Gallery, clearing data will not affect the images saved on the device. This only affects the app and should not affect files saved to the device since the Gallery app is only a viewer and not responsible for saving or keeping the actual images.

Let us know what you find.

Im Using the gallery. I can see all the other photos just fine with anything.
Starting over: I accidently touched or swiped. One photo got covered up. I see the image for a split second then it gets covered. The other photo has a wide sripe at the bottom that looks like a street barricade .

Can you copy the image to another device, like a pc, laptop or a different phone & verify the image is viewable from that device?

That would rule out that the image was corrupted.

Try also clearing the app cache/storage for the Gallery app in Settings>Apps, and then Force Stop it. This will not affect your actual photos. Open Gallery again and give it a few seconds to rescan storage for media and rebuild its database. Does the problem persist?
