Seriously...the only thing you lose removing the 3.5 jack is the antenna capability to receive FM and not every phone has FM anyway. The only other minor inconvenience is charging and listening at the same and there are solutions for that. It's also a feature most of us most probably don't use.

They could put in FM if they wanted to. I had a Samsung dumbphone that had no 3.5mm jack and still had FM radio. There was a coil on the back cover that acted as the antenna.

I'm sure they could and I believe that's been brought... which is another why losing the jack is not that dramatic. If it's a real big deal it will make it's way back.

It's a non-issue for me outside of making your current headphone cord look a little odd. Just stick an adapter on the end of your headphone cord and leave it there. That's what I did with my iPhone 7 Plus.

It seems that you and all of your cherry picked sources all still misunderstand that 100% of what worked with a jack still works, in exactly the same way, without the jack except for, as far as we can tell so far, FM radio. It's interesting that several of those rags have also published articles since then stating that they're totally fine with it.

Wired headphones, still work. Card reader, still works. Selfie stick thing, still works. All of it. Because the functionality of the port is still there, it's just external instead of internal. Nothing changed on any of that stuff except for, so far, FM radio.

Third time. Nothing changed for all the stuff you're complaining about. Wired headphones still work. Exactly the same way. The choice is not limited to BlueTooth. There are 2 other options that you're completely ignoring. That's 4 options total, but your narrative is based on KNOWINGLY, and intentionally, pretending that there are only two options. When you are KNOWINGLY spreading false information, that's a problem.

Yeah it still works... with a DONGLE you gotta carry around. What's the point if you always gotta have the dongle around 24/7? Just keep the dang jack, jeez.

The thing is the 3.5mm is still widely used by many people around the world. It's cheap simple. If you're going to take it out, then replace it with something else. In this case, there is no replacement therefore making it inconvenient. Bluetooth is not the answer nor the same. Dongle is annoying.

The people just have to accept it no matter what. It's the future, but there's nothing innovative nor any improvements with audio.

In this case, there is no replacement therefore making it inconvenient.

The replacement is the audio standards for USB Type C connectors. The adapter is for legacy devices that haven't caught up yet. Adapters exist in all tech because all tech is constantly moving forward. Example, HDMI to DVI adapters, HDMI to to DisplayPort, etc. That's how people can enjoy new tech without having to buy all new accessories.

I do remember the ad. I think people were more cheering the snarky rivalry than the actual product, but either way it's a different scenario. Apple did this without an affordable fallback plan when the tech simply wasn't ready. Google waited for the audio standard to be approved and then, only when it made sense, made the move. The situation we want to avoid is the one where, like the HTC U11, the adapter that comes with it only works properly with the HTC U11. We want universal accessories.

I mean I get you feel that way but please don't act like you speak for everyone. I definitely do not feel this way.. at least not about the jack. I have a jack now on my S8+ and I have never used it. So just because you see it as inconvenient definitely doesn't mean everyone just agrees with you.

I didn't care when Apple did it and I don't care if Google does it. It simply isn't a "must have" on my checkbox for phones.

I think with how much of phone nuts most of us are on the phone .. I doubt worrying about a battery being in the wild is a true concern . Plus there are ways to dispose of them properly.



Yeah we won't see eye to eye on it. I don't agree on the "things we accept from mobile companies that we wouldn't anywhere else" -- since I don't get what you mean. If all phones go away from headphone jacks then we have to accept it because what else can we do except build our own phone? Same thing as if another industry fully stopped doing something -- what else could we do? How could we not accept it if it is something of true importance like smartphones have become in day-to-day life?



Ah you said not a standard as of today but I don't remember seeing one 2017 that didn't have BT on the entire lot when I was getting my truck.

How does the FCC chairman expect FM to work on phones without wired headphones attached? The wire acts as the antenna. If headphones aren't attached to the phone, there's no FM antenna. As you mentioned before, an internal antenna is really the best solution. In a time of disaster it's silly to assume everyone will have their phone and their headphones.

Perhaps they need to hire an electrical engineer to head the FCC rather than an attorney. No offense intended to the attorneys in the crowd but an EE degree goes a long way in understanding antennas.

That was pretty much Apple's response to the FCC Chairman.

I definitely see a mix out in the wild. I see people using the dongle (most people I know w/ the dongle use the tip dsignori described a few posts up), others using regular headphone jacks with older phones, and bluetooth. I never see just headphone jacks. It varies from person to person.

For my personal family / friends -- they all use BT.
