samsung s9, messages v10.1.40.77, android v9

scheduled text messages do not work periodically

the view details of a "late" message will show sending

the issue is resolved by turning off the phone and turning back on
or
if a scheduled message is successfully processed, all prior late message are sent

i am on my 2nd s9, software flashed 3 times, app forced stop,
all possible cache cleared

there is a finger pointing session between t-mobile and samsung

since messages is open source, i cannot find any support nor
explanation of it's internal logic

samsung claims all text message issues are carrier related problems
t-mobile says they cant see the "late" scheduled messages appear on their network

my theory is the messages app does not send the message to the carrier until
the requested date and time are both satisfied

if that's true, something is causing the app not to send the message at
the requested date / time, without any retry logic
unless you restart the device or
you have a scheduled message that is successfully processed.

the t-mobile folks want to sell me a new phone since i did not not purchase the original device thru them

samsung wants to hold my phone hostage at a repair center for an
undetermined amount of time while they figure it put

i am REALLY tired of all the wrong answers or guesses.
i can guess as bad as they do.

i thought of using another text message app but it is my understanding
that messages on a samsung s9 is hard configured to RCS and cannot be changed.

it is also my understanding that messages in RCS cannot be copied / converted from one app to another

there had to be someone out there who knows the logic / issue / solution

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello
thanks for your replies.
i have since created an acct
i dont believe i understand your response with respect to my original question / issue
Hi, welcome!
Your having a issue with your stock message app , have you tried Android messages? It has those features

Those 2 arrows in my screenshot first is to reply with a quote to that person 2nd is to reply to thread without quote. Sorry couldn't load in PMScreenshot_20191115-132546__01__01.jpeg

thanks for the reply
regarding the android message app, how do i copy my old data to the new app?
any ideas on what the original problem / error is?
Once you download the message app it automatically transfer your messages
i have read adroid messages is a big battery drain
I haven't seen battery drain and I have it on multiple devices

As you pointed out this message issue wouldn't be related to anything to do with T-Mobile. They have to receive the message first. It may have to do with your device but not in a defective, it's broken and needs replaced, kind of way. Seeing that you have a Samsung my first thought is Device Care, in your settings. Go there and under battery see if you have put the app to sleep. Samsung is doing what it can to help users get the most out of their batteries and will often tell you something is running in the background and draining said battery. Not wanting the device to die prematurely we blindly hit "Put the app to sleep". What they don't tell you is every time from then on that it detects the app running in the background it will put the app to sleep. My guess is the app is asleep when it should be sending the message, then when it wakes up after the send time it just doesn't know how to handle the message, which it sounds like your case when another message sends it can then follow suit.

Google doesn't have scheduled messaging. There are actually a lot of complaints on another forum where everyone is being directed to send requests through the contact us link on the app page in the Play Store. Right now the only thing Google messages has going for it, IMO, is RCS and that's hit or miss because both users mush have it for it to work.

Have you checked to see if your Device Care Battery manager is putting the app to sleep?

How much do you really like the app that you wouldn't be willing to try another?

Hello VidJunky
Sorry for my delayed reply.
Battery management was on and has since been turned off
Since the problem was sporadic I wanted to give it a few days before crying victory
Thank you for your suggestion.
It made the most sense due to the sporadic nature.
Stay tuned and I will update this thread

Hello VidJunky
I had another scheduled text message
that failed to send today at 1600.
Status is sending forever until
I power the device off and on or
another scheduled message works

Next???

Wow... Well that sucks. So how attached are you to that app?

The next thing I would say is let's narrow it down to the app, the device or some other app.

Do you think you can make this fail? I mean if you set up 3, 4 or even 5 scheduled messages for 20 minutes apart do you think any of them would fail, or it doesn't happen that regularly?

Some other app;
To try and eliminate the possibility that this is being caused by another app, start the device in Safe Mode, schedule the test messages and allow it to do, or not do its thing. If the messages fail while in Safe Mode this points to the device or the app itself because in SM other apps shouldn't be running unless opened by the user. If they all go through you'd have to make a bigger sample and then start trying to narrow down suspect apps. Data Savers, Memory Savers and Antivirus/Malware apps shoot to the top of my list for something like this.

This is how you get your device into Safe Mode... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...base-216817/&usg=AOvVaw1ICL6dImhQ2_dz9Zbxbw9J

The device;
When does this happen most, when the device is idle and has been idle for some time, when the device is in use or when the device is in a certain location? i.e. at work, at home, on the road, someplace else

Have you ever noticed your signal at 1 or 2 bars in the last place the device was when the message failed? Could it possible that you're simply not getting a good enough signal to send a message?

Do immediately sent messages ever fail?

How many messages do you have on your device? Hundreds, thousands, tens or hundreds of thousands? The latter portion of that scale can cause issues and some housekeeping may help just by reducing the number of messages being stored.

The SMS app;
The fastest easiest way to tell if it is the app is to get another one. If messages still fail even with another app it's likely one of the above.

Hello VidJunky

Thank you for your response

Yes it does

I am not attached at all to this app.
I would consider another app
in a flash as long I can copy my existing data
and have the schedule feature

I can't make it fail on command

Your suggestion of test text messages
I have already done.
Some do not work, some do

As I said at the very start,
It is a sporadic problem

And you saw my two solutions.

I would love to know the messages logic
a bit better.

It makes no sense there is no retry logic
upon failure , text status is sending forever

Yet when another scheduled text does work
It processes all "late" messages successfully

I am not sure I agree with your comments
of another app or safe mode

I am guessing the true logic of message
may be the culprit here but no one
knows how the app really works

Immediate text messages never fail

As far as a pattern nothing sticks out.

I am either connected to my home WIFI
or my data plan.
Which is another interesting question.
Some say you have to NOT be on your
WIFI when sending a text message
Others say the opposite

All goes back to the logic of messages

Hello VidJunky

I just now found something under medium power saving mode that had the following enabled

Restrict background
Prevents background apps from using
WIFI and mobile data

I have just now disabled this and will monitor.

This was long the lines of your first suggestion and honestly made the most sense.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed

Hello VidJunky

No success, I had another missed , late message in sending status

I can restart my phone or wait for a successful scheduled message to be processed

Awaiting suggestions from you or any one

Is it ever two messages back to back? This obviously would not be a solution but as I'm out of ideas it may serve as a work around. Set your initial message then set one to yourself 5 minutes it so later. If the original message doesn't send them the follow up message should trigger it. Sorry I don't have more than that. Perhaps someone else will chime in and have something else to offer.
