Screen Burn Issue

I currently have the Samsung S8 Plus. Love it. Pre-ordered the S9 Plus from Best Buy today. Can't wait.

Only semi issue I ever had with the S8 Plus was that I had some screen burn-in. I'm wondering, first, will the S9 Plus have the same potential issue? Second, if so, what can or should be done from the beginning to avoid it?

The S8 Plus had a screen burn in issue? I didn't know about this, but I owned an S8 Plus from release day (April 21?) until the Note 8 came out last September, and I didn't have any problems. I do know that there are two things you do not need to worry about: the AOD clock, and the square home button indicator at the center bottom of the phone. The AOD clock moves around visibly from time to time to prevent burn in. It turns out the home button indicator also moves, but almost imperceptibly.

Other than that...don't regularly leave your screen on for hours at a time when not using the phone, I guess?

All AMOLED screens can show signs of burn in... How fast and how bad is a function of the individuals usage. The pixel sites have a finite duty cycle, they will degrade over time.

I also just started noticing a screen burn-in on my S8 (not Plus). I brought up a white blank image to see what the burn-in was, and it's Google Navigation!! (specifically from Android Auto) :'( Pretty surprised that an LED display would get burn in, in less than a year. Wow...

Good thing I pre-ordered the S9 on T-mobile! With my trade-in and 50% off the phone (via monthly discounted payments), my bill is actually going to go down $15 for getting a new phone :D

I'm not sure I understand your logic. T-Mobile isn't offering 50% off plus a trade-in. It was offering up to 50% off with your trade-in. Assuming you were paying on an S8, you have to pay the balance off on the S8 first, then trade it in. You don't get to turn in the S8 for $350 while you you still owe over $300 on it. Seems like you would need to account for paying off the phone before trade-in.

Maybe I'm just misreading your post. I'm selling my S8+ on ebay. It's already up to $450 with a day to go. Selling it outright is definitely a better way to get top dollar. eBay has a promo out there where select customers can get guaranteed sales value if they list it how ebay wants them to list it. I was guaranteed $417 from ebay, so I jumped on it. If it had sold for less, I would have gotten the difference from ebay.

Here's the details of the deal: eBay's Price Guarantee

I'm also trading in my old S7 Edge for $300. Didn't think I could get that much for it on ebay and Samsung gave me the amount off the order instead of through bill credits. When you tack on the free money from using ebates, and the reduced tax burden for taking $300 off the cost of the phone in advance, I come out just as well without dealing with bill credits from T-Mobile.

For anyone looking to cash in their phone, they may want to see what they can get from ebay for it first (if they even offer you the deal).

Screen burn-in in AMOLED displays is basically related to screen brightness. The higher you keep it, the faster an image will burn in. And if you have the same image showing on the screen for a couple of hour-long commutes every day, and don't have the screen blanking when it's not in use, a year is more than enough time. Keep the brightness down and let the screen shut off when you don't need it.

What causes screen burn-in is the blue subpixels in the AMOLED display. The Samsung displays have less blue subpixels and more green subpixels, meaning that they have less chance of getting screen burn-in, although people have still experienced it.

Note 8 since release day and no burn in. I wonder if its worse for people who dont change wallpaper launchers icons themes, etc often?

You heard me correctly. I had my S8 since it's release date. I only owed half of it. They are giving me the max trade-in. Then I get 50% off my monthly installment plan/S9 if I stay with them for another 2 years (which I will be). So I'm saving $15/month since it's normally $30. Trust me I confirmed this after I pre-ordered.

Yup. S8+ owned from day 1. Noticed burn-in about 3 or 4 months ago. If I load up a blank Google search page I can see my docked icons burned into the bottom of the screen. For some reason the apps to the further right side of the screen are more visible but definitely there.

Previously I was one of those people that preferred to use their phones on max brightness 100% of the time. I've realised now this was likely the reason for the burn-in. And it wasn't only until about 6 months ago that I started using auto brightness.

My home screen icons have always been the same, never moved around or swapped out. I've used everything from darker to brighter wallpapers. And my screen time-out is set to 30 seconds so my phone never sits on the home screen very long. Therefore I have to assume it was due to overuse of max brightness.

All the OLED screens smartphones have this issue (bezeless screen has an additional issue).
It's easy for the OLED screens to get a burn in.
The additional issue in a bezeless screen is the blank spots marks.
Let's say you're watching youtube or playing a game.
If you fill the display, you won't see everything so you choose not to.
After some time it leaves 2 brighter spots wherever the display was blank.
I have the Galaxy S9+ and even though it is temporary I am really disappointed because I also watch youtube a lot.
I now rather the older screens which are the LCD screens.
Maybe there will be an update that fixes that by displaying something else (like backround) in those spots so there won't be a brighter-white mark.
