When outdoors, the screen dims and then brightens randomly. Attentive display settings have battery saver mode disabled. What is this?

it is probably set on auto brightness, it changes brightness in response to ambient light to save battery and make it comfortable on eyes. YOu can go into brightness setting and lock it to a particular brightness to disable it.

I have auto brightness disabled. I should have clarified.

My settings are the same as the OP and I am having the same problem. Did anybody figure out what is going on? It is really annoying.

Thanks.

Happens to me occasionally when the sun hits my turbo as well. Auto brightness is also off for me too...

Just a hunch, but could be the heat or the glare of the direct sunlight messing with the IR sensors. I could also be very wrongs as well.

Definitely not heat here in NY, lol!! Also with auto brightness off you would think the sensors would be off too.

Well, the good news is that I am not alone in this. The bad news is that nobody seems to have an answer. My last BB (I switched full time to Android 3 years ago) did the same thing even though I had the auto-dimming turned off on it, as well. Very odd.

Just noticed this for the first time today while outside in direct sunlight. I have auto brightness turned off and max brightness. So not sure why it would dim or get brighter. Any solution yet?

As I had founded out it's a standart feature for AMOLED screens.
I've made a simple test imitating the strong sunlight.
Auto brightness was turned off, screen was set on 100% of brightness. I nosed the flashlight beam on the front panel sensors and in a instant screen gets even more bright, after flashlight was turned off screen returned to 100% after several seconds.
Samsung has the same feature but it didn't arise brightness, it arise saturation or contrast or both (tested on my friend's A5)
:)

I've observed the same behavior from my turbo. If I remember correctly one of the ota updates stated that they "fixed the brightness issue". I think after getting complaints of the screen being hard to see outside, Motorola set up the screen to go into brightness overdrive in direct sunlight. Just a guess.

If that is true then motorola has another automatic auto brightness enabled. Either way it is called autobrightness. I dont have this problem because I dont use all the silly motorola apps. I have auto brightness on the phone on and it does what its designed. Its meant to get brighter in the sun so you can read what your doing

I use an app called Lux so I can control the brightness the way I want it - dimmer most of the time, brighter when I am outdoors in the sun. You can associate specific external light levels to screen brightness. It's worth a try, though I think the more advanced features are either a pro key purchase or an in-app purchase - still, I think you can try out the free version and see if that solves the problem.

Was waiting for someone to post the same. There is definitely an auto brightness adjustment even with auto off when it gets to sunny. I actually like it, but don't see why you can't select it yourself.

I was hoping that the Lollipop update would remedy this, but it actually seems to have made it worse. I have "Adaptive Brightness" off, and when I am in bright sunlight the screen actually dims. No, it is not an optical illusion, as when I moved into shade, after a few moments, the screen got significantly brighter. I tried living with "Adaptive Brightness" on, but the constant adjustments to the screen's brightness are really annoying. Are there any other settings in Lollipop that may fix this?
