After a bit more troubleshooting and research, it looks like the Samsung edge lighting feature replaces/changes the behaviour.
So I was using a Pixel which is stock standard Android without all the Samsung molestation hacks they make. And I was expecting the screen to wake up on notifications, like a iPhone or Pixel phone. But Samsung must have overruled this default behaviour with the edge lighting feature.
Very annoying... not sure if there is any solution, hack or work around for this.
I like the screen to wake up on notifications because I use my phone to manage my day. So when Google Calendar sends a notification for an event, I like to see it on the screen without having to touch the phone. And also, I like to dismiss it by swiping it away without going to lock screen / unlocking. Currently, the phone makes a sound and a tiny little icon appears on the display always on screen. This is pointless, it just disrupts me and forces me to check the phone to see what's going on.
The Glimpse Notifications app is ok, but it doesn't obey do not disturb mode. I have most of my apps with notifications off, some apps as on, and some apps as on with exception to do not disturb mode. Why? I enable do not disturb mode during work and don't want to screen to wake up unless the app has a exception, so things like my server monitoring app must be able to wake up the screen even in do not disturb mode, but things like whatsapp shouldn't as it is not important.
Also, the problem with Samsung edge lighting is this:
- Very few apps work with it, pretty much only Samsung apps, 3rd party apps continue not to be able to wake up the screen on notifications
- And even on the Samsung apps, the feature is crap compared to default Android, it appears for a fraction on a second and disappears, so it's impossible to even read it, you can't swipe it away (you are forced to unlock the phone effectively) and even worse, when there are several notifications, it just shows a bunch of popups one by one quickly (rather than stack them up)
Samsung edge lighting is such crap, absolutely no need to have replaced default Android behaviour for this rubbish.
Any ideas?
