Screen Horizontal Lines When Dim Issue

So like most of us, I just got the galaxy nexus today and I'm very happy with it. But I do have one concern.

When my phone is on a lower brightness setting on a white background, I can see all sorts of funky horizontal lines across it. It almost looks like something is burned into the screen.

I had to screw with the brightness/contrast of the picture to get it to show up. Even then it doesn't show up as obviously as it does in person. It's just a very inconsistent "white". Lots of horizontal lines across the whole thing and that big white section at the upper third. Is this something wrong with the phone? Or is that normal?

If this has already been posted, just point me in the right direction. Searching didn't help.

I have a similar question only I have vertical and horizontal lines. I see them big time on settings screens where there is a gradient of gray. I'm going back to Verizon to compare mine to a store unit. I don't see many other people complaining about it, so I'm hoping mine is flawed.

I'm still waiting for a delivery but I heard that's normal for amoled screens.

I have some vertical lines as well. They're all very distinct, especially when browsing the market with its gray background. So looking at this link, I'm definitely going to go to the store today and see if they can exchange it. Hopefully they aren't sold out...

Im having the same issues... and 2 other people I know have the same issue... im almost thinking its just the technology of the screen... kinda sucks... but again what can you do...

Same issue here, although it's not really driving me too crazy yet. If you look at something with a white background it makes it look paper-like almost, hard to explain. I've heard of other people observing this as well, so I think it's just inherent in the technology for whatever reason.

The Nexus S does this as well, as did the Nexus One. It's a product of the technology. I have 4 friends that got the GN yesterday like me, and we all have the lines. My friend that had a Nexus S before said that he stopped using the auto-brightness for this reason. he would use half or full brightness instead, and the lines were no longer an issue.

(This is also why I wish the Messaging app and other screens (Settings) wouldn't have solid colors as the background and were instead black or at least had the option of setting them black)

it is COMPLETELY NORMAL. -- and i hate them, it constantly distracts me. Solution: crank the screen brightness all the way up and buy an extended battery

i have the same issue. I wont kill my eyes cranking up the brightness. I have a 4s, and now i cant tolerate screen issues. I am bummed. I so love this OS. Kinda stops once it hits the hardware for me. I think with time i could learn to live with the screen. Seems the natural really is organic.

Well guys, I don't know how normal this is. I had pretty distinct horizontal bars on mine. It almost looked like the screen was burned in. I took it back to the store and they exchanged it without much fuss. The new one is just fine, as was the one on display at the store.

I can still see some very very faint horizontal and vertical lines, but only if i'm looking really closely. nothing as drastic as before. It's definitely worth comparing yours to the store's and exchanging it if you have that option. Easiest way for me to have it show was in camera on low brightness, point at a white sheet of paper, or the wall.

Yes, I noticed this too, especially on the market.
It's like display technology took a step backwards, as I used to see this on some old CRT computer monitors I had from the early 90s.
It's almost like a burn-in effect.

Definitely try taking it back if you can. Mine was even unlocked and they didn't give me crap about it.

Yeah...on "lower" brigthness (when screen is about to timeout, etc.) on whites/grays I can see vertical lines and it gets a bit splotchy....is this a defect or just what this screen is going to do on low brightness? Just trying to find out if I have a defective unit or not.

So I got another nexus. The screen is fabulous compared to the last one. If it is a big ebough defect, by all means dont accept that. The screen should be awesome. These are organic LEDs so keep that in mind.

I mean...mine seems fairly faint, but I don't know without anything else to compare it to. I just don't want to go forward customizing it to my liking if it ends up being a lemon.

I don't see any lines but when on automatic brightness or low setting the screen looks very grainy, like recycled paper or something haha. The people that exchanged for new units, do you have this problem also or is it not noticeable on your new unit?

I just returned my original phone which had an issue with thick bands running horizontally across the screen and the "paper" effect.

I looked at the in store demo - it has problems with thinner lines running vertically down the screen. Much to my dismay my replacement also has the same thin lines running horizontally that are actually more apparent on greys (and unfortunately almost every color in the ICS OS menus bring the lines out as well).

The paper effect I can live with but the criss-crossing lines seem ridiculous to me. I really cannot believe they green lighted this screen to go in a flagship phone.

Got my nexus on launch day and noticed the lines. Most of the forums said it was common for AMOLED screens so I thought nothing of it. I could correct it with brightness but still noticed it on occasion.

However, my wife got a nexus a few days later and her screen was much better, no lines. So I took mine back to the local Verizon store and they returned it without issue. The guy at Verizon actually noticed the lines as well and compared to his own nexus.

Long story short, my screen is much improved and without lines. Go exchange the phones until you are happy with the screen.
