Screen on/off; setting lock screen

I would like a way to turn the screen back on without pushing the small little button at the top, which is frustrating. Can't I just touch the screen and it bring me to the lock screen?

Also, is there a way to set the lock screen on? For example, if I'm about to throw my phone into my bag, I'd rather put the lock screen on than turning the screen off in case I would need it soon after.

I've noticed if I set my screen to always on, the lock screen never comes on... is this correct, and how could I fix this?

You have to press the power button to turn the screen on, there is no other way.

and I'm a little bit confused by the second question, but if your trying to have the lock screen showing/phone locked without the screen turned off, there isn't a way for that either.
