What's the consensus on the need for a screen protector, or not?
I assume the gorilla can still get scratched?
What is the best vendor product protector (and which are those to avoid)?

I just have the cheap tempered glass protectors you can find on amazon for just about everything. As difficult as it is to scratch the gorilla glass, I like having that extra layer to take one for the team if it was to be dropped, or against some sand in your pocket that could scratch the glass. The tempered glass will shatter and spread the force out through its whole surface. Rather replace a $10 protector, than the whole phone/screen.

It's already saved my girlfriends Note 4 from one fall.

You won't get a shaped tempered glass protector to fit the edge shape - don't waste your cash, get a TPU flexible plastic one - some of them fit really well and at least you get some protection - I reckon they would work like sticky tape when you want to drill a plastic number-plate in stopping a shattering incident and at least you phone can still feel your finger.

I actually dropped $35 on the new Otterbox curved TGP. And it was beautiful. It fit perfectly, no problems when I put a case on it. The adhesive is black and is on the top and bottom edges of the protector, so if you have the silver one (I do), you lose that. It has a tacky surface on the back of the rest of the protector. I took mine off after three days because of the reduced sensitivity. I felt like I was pounding with my thumbs while texting and still missing letters. And since there is no adhesive along the edges, I was finding white specks that had worked their way under the protector. And the tackiness that was supposed to keep the protector in contact with he screen was just tacky enough to not allow that specks to come free. So, they got a lot right as far as fit goes, but I couldn't live with what they didn't get right. Your mileage may vary.

After reading a post that someone said they were having screen issues like the phone had a life of its own. I was experiencing the same issue the cursor would jump all over the place it would randomly pocket dial people that I last called and open apps without my knowledge. I decided to remove my gorilla glass screen protector or whatever brand it was. after trying numerous things over and over the problem persisted but I'm happy to say that after removing the screen protector the problem has been eliminated. I hope this helps someone

Still going without one. I've had mine in and out of my pockets in and out of my bunker gear and my work uniforms and still not a single scratch. I also have the Samsung insurance on my phone just incase I were to damage the display in Any way though.

I've now tried two different Tempered Glass screen protectors.

I'm yet to come across one that adheres via silicone all over.

They have a strip of adhesive across the top, bottom and down each side.

Neither stayed on and clashed with my original Samsung Leather Case.

Kind of given up on them now.

Was playing with idea of one that just covers the main part of the screen and not the edges.

I'm not keen on Tpu options as I'm not liking the feel of the screen with them.
