Screen scratches so EASY

Screen protector and case will minimize potential scratches and damage. That's what I tell myself and why I always have to have them. Even then, however, something can still happen.

Knives, keys etc. have no effect on gorilla glass. But sand particles will leave micro scratches. Never carry a phone in a pocket, I did that with my LG G5 for a bit and that phone had micro scratches. So its not a Samsung problem. Besides as most say, that's what screen protectors are for. I still use the plastic ones, cheap and easily replaceable. Just peel off and your screen is as good as new, even after months of heavy use.

Yeah, I never use a screen protector glass or plastic. They just ruin the feel of the screen to me. I always do eventually end up with very tiny hairline scratches here and there but nothing noticeable unless I really look for it at certain angles. It doesn't bother me though and the price I pay for not wanting the extra protection.

Carried my 8+ in front pocket for a year with no scratches. None showed up using Gear VR either. So far nothing on my 9+. You have diamond nails, or some in your pocket? ;)

Displacement of properties with glass. The "softer" it is, the less it cracks, but the more it scratches, and vice versa.

I got phone launch morning and baby my stuff somehow my plus has two fairly sizeable scratches?? Hasn't been put in my pocket with anything, dropped, or set on a hard surface. I'm dumb founded. Debating exchanging it or just ordering Whitestone in hopes it covers scratches

How do you plan on exchanging it outside of the return period?

These are favorite posts for every new phone that comes out. Every phone ever made scratches to easily lol.

No scratches on mine yet. I put it on my pocket all day in and out.
One thing to be careful if you din't notice is those metal pins for the small pocket in front right pocket
can easily scratch your phone screen.

Gorilla Glass 5 is not "softer" than GG4 though
I didn't say that. Just that the more glass is made to reduce breaks/cracks, the more it can scratch. Bullet proof glass is good example. Hard to crack or break, but easy to scratch.

While that is a general tendency in material properties, according to Corning's product information sheets, GG5 is both tougher and harder.

Exactly. While it's true that there is a trade-off between the two, it is possible to increase one while not sacrificing the other. Today's hardened glasses are both more scratch resistant, and crack resistant, then the products available some years ago.

Ever since the Galaxy S8 and the note 8 and now the 9 as plus these screens are so easily scratched that's why I've been putting screen protectors on mine

Exactly, for brittle materials, when a force is applied they reach yield strength and then fracture with very little displacement or in other words there is very little elastic and plastic deformation before cracking, hardness is how resistant the material is to being indented (usually measured with constant compression load of a sharp object) or scratched (in this case we're worried about scratch hardness which is visible fracture or plastic deformation due to friction with sharp, harder object)

In general there is a tendency that harder materials are also more brittle, and ductile materials have a lower hardness (diamond is very hard and very brittle, polypropylene copolymers used in living hinges are very ductile and very low hardness) but hardness and brittle are not the same thing and they are not directly proportional, iron is hard and brittle, steel is hard and not brittle.

Corning claims they used a different, improved strengthening process to achieve the greater damage resistance. The new strengthening process is what has contributed to the enhanced drop performance of Gorilla Glass 5 and not that they decided to make is "softer" to have a more ductile material

The Note 8 screen is very tough, I am rough on my phone and never use a screen protector, no scratches on mine

I also wonder if the light scratches that people see are on the oleophobic coating, I never saw any scratch at all on the Note 8 in 6 months but it was one of the worst phones I had with smudges and fingerprint marks, the front glass had A LOT all the time, the S9+ seems a lot better in that aspect I see very few smudges but under the sun I can see several light scratches, they don't bother me though anywhere close to how a screen protector would bother me ruining the whole experience

I'm using the Whitestone Domed glass and I can't even tell I have a screen protector on my phone. It looks & feels exactly like the original screen with zero sensitivity issues. It keeps my screen scratch free & protected. Only way I know it's there is due to the cutout for the speaker, proximity sensor, earpiece, and selfie camera keeping the experience quite original and awesome imo :)

I have lots of little scratches around the edges of the phone. Only noticed them under certain light condition. I had a high end screen protector at first. Had issues that I later found out. Almost all the screen protectors messed with the touch screen screen. Even after messing with the touch sensitivity. A T-Mobile Corporate Store Rep said they got notice to stop selling screen protectors with all phone's for the S9 / plus. An official statement by Samsung said the screen doesn't need a screen protector and using one could could damage or limit the usage of the phone. That was something found online researching. Stores were given similar memo about not using screen proton the new phones.

After googling this a few tech sites tested a few and had a handful that work with the phone but it's not alot of options it seems.
