So just something that I've noticed that I'm not sure if other people have encountered. But, When I have my phone on during a call in say a cradle in my car and I'm on a phone call on speaker; the screen goes black (as I would expect it to.) But when I go to wake it to end a call or go back to the screen, I can not double tap it or twist it to light the screen up again. I have to hit the sleep button or wait for the other person to end the call. I don't have a screen protector and my case does not block anything pertinent to the problem. Any suggestions or explanations. Love the phone and already satisfied with my switch from My Iphone to Android.

First of all, I presume you meant to post in the Pixel & Pixel XL forum, not the Pixel C (which is a tablet, not a phone).

Does this happen only in the car/cradle? Does your mount or case use magnets in any way?

I don't use speakerphone that often, but my recollection is that the screen does not go black when on speaker.

Please go to Settings -> Accessibility and let me know if you have anything enabled there.

DHShick - I have confirmed that my Pixel XL's screen does not go black when using speakerphone.

If yours is doing so, then almost certainly something is blocking the proximity sensor which, on the XL, is the oblong shape just below the earpiece speaker. The only time your screen should go black is after initiating a normal (non-speaker) call and then holding the phone within about an inch of your face (or waving a finger over the area indicated) thus triggering the proximity detector. As soon as move the phone away from your face the screen should turn back on.

If this isn't working correctly for you then 1) you have a screen protector or something else which is causing a false trigger of the proximity detector or 2) your proximity detector isn't working correctly. There are a number of apps available to test the detector - just search the Play Store for "proximity detector sensor test"

Are you absolutely certain you do not have a screen protector installed?

Isn't twist to change front or rear camera? Also, a motion gesture won't work if you're driving down the road it has to be sitting still for it to work. I've never had a phone that could wake like that during a call. I've always had to press something to get it to wake up to hang up.

The Pixel's screen should not go black during a speakerphone call. Period.

During a regular call, the screen goes black when the proximity detector is triggered and then immediately wakes up when the trigger is gone. On the Pixel XL, the proximity detector is within the small oblong shape just below the phone's earpiece; when something (like you face) gets within about an inch of it, it triggers and turns off the screen.

Simple test: place the phone flat on a table. Initiate a regular call and move your hands away from the phone. If the screen immediately goes black when the call begins, then the proximity detector is either bad or blocked.

Maybe the OP does not have a screen protector, but how about a skin similar to this DBrand skin, but a cheap one without the proper cutouts?

My XL does it.

I was just on a call in the car. . Bluetooth works great, made the call, chatted, go to hang up..... Screen is off.

Picking the phone up did not bring it back to life. . Options were hit the end call button in the steering wheel (safer) or put my finger on the back of the phone.

Once I touched my finger to the sensor, it came back to life and I could hang up.

Hmmm... I guess my speakerphone calls are never long enough for the screen to go blank. How long does your call typically last before the screen turns off?

It's equal to your screen timeout setting. Mine also shuts off after my 1 minute screen off setting.

This started after the last update with mine. In case or not, and in hand because I don't have a car, the screen goes black when the call starts and stays black. I have a really hard time getting it back. It doesn't do this with speaker phone as far as I can tell but speaker phone isn't as clear, either. And the raise to wake has stopped working, also. Not just on calls but in general. I tried a couple of apps that are supposed to keep the screen on but apparently none of them work on nougat or maybe just not on the version of nougat the pixel has.

Mine goes black when on speaker phone during a call too

The screen will still go by your timeout setting -- But it won't go black by the proximity sensor as if you weren't on speakerphone.

2nd XL and same issue. Not a screen cover nor the case as even if both removed same issue. Once the screen goes dark I can shake it and it will not turn back on unless I use my fingerprint.

That is the screen locking. What is your screen lockout set to?

15 seconds but I've tried a few different settings and still the same. Verizon Tech Support states they are aware of the issue and it's been widely reported as does Google Tech Support.

Mine won't even come back with the fingerprint. It came back seemingly randomly after about 10 minutes of me freaking out. And my screen lock and screen off times are not set for ten minutes.
