Screen stays Black during phone call, does not unblack to end call

What did you end up doing? My XL is having this problem. Do. i need to go get a new phone?

The problem for me was a screen protector that had a black portion that matched the phone bezel. It was blocking the sensor.

i had the same problem and was about to trade in my new Pixel XL 2. Before you replace your screen protector or do a factory reset, take a soft cloth (preferably microfiber) and clean the top part of your screen really well, with a little elbow grease. I did this and my proximity sensor works perfectly again. the recent 8.1 update may have changed the settings for the sensor, making it to where any oils or dust in the way prevent it from working. good luck!

Screen protector is off and my still does it randomly

I am having the same issue. I believe this started after a update because my phone did not originally do this.

Try toggling Adaptive Brightness off and back on. Some people on redit said that worked for them.

Post #22 . The sensor is optical, and dirt on the screen can sometimes cause a problem.
