SD Card in Nexus 4: What is it, if no expandable storage?

The design of the N4 device does not provide for micro SD card expandable storage. And yet, when I examine the phone's folders with ES File Explorer, an "SD card" is referred to. Please explain. Thanks :confused:
 
Simple: The OS emulates an SD card from built-in storage for apps that may require it.
 
emulated..... so when you connect ur phone to PC it shows only the emulated storage and not the whole system drive.

I'm wondering... could be partitioned space. Not sure if they bothered with making it a separate partition. Perhaps someone with specific knowledge could comment here on that point?
