"SD Cards are useless with cloud storage" NO THEY ARE NOT

At this day and age, you photos are likely being mirrored in services like Dropbox, photostream or google plus, making a 2nd physical backup superfluous for most part.

I stopped using thumb drives for this main reason - already have enough storage, and using it to transfer data to another device was just too cumbersome compared to cloud services.

It's not just about Unlimited Data but how the "Cloud" affects your battery life.

Re: "SD Cards are useless with cloud storage" NO THEY ARE NOT

You really think someone with less than a gig of storage space used is the majority?

I'm looking at phones DAILY and I've never seen less than 8gb of storage used on one

Well you must lve in a very techy area. No one where I live has broken the 6GB barrier(besides me)

Not in many countries in which millions of phones with SD card were sold. You need to have unlimited plan and good Internet speed to effectively use cloud. Well some people tend to judge things based on their circumstances and fail to see the big picture. I chuckled every time people say SD cards are useless.

For most normal users, they are useless. Anyone that is posting here isn't a normal user, by the way.

If most normal users need SD cards, how has the iPhone sold so well?

I agree with the OP that cloud isn't the proper replacement for storage of any kind. Having said that I'm not a big storage user on phones so I've gotten along well with 16GB for years. Tablets are another story though, that's where I do my games and movies so I need 32+ on those

I think that is actually a majority. I don't think the average person has gigs of music and/or video. For legality reasonings, a music album would be between $5 and $15, that's a lot if money before you get to gigs worth.

I have a 32 gig Zune HD most of the way filled with music ripped from my personal cds. Not talking lossless or even 320 bit rate mp3, but mp3 that is all under 200 bit rate. I am not rich or anything, but I have been buying cds for 20 to 30 years.

Simple

Because of great marketing.

Apple took an underwhelming phone, (I call it a feature phone with some smartphone functions) and marketed the crap out of it, programmed people to think it was the greatest (including myself at one point) and it sold.

You market something right it will sell no matter how bad it is.

Look at Mc hammer and vanilla ice.

Or souljah boy.

Horrible acts, yet markets correctly they sold.

The original E. T. video game for atari. So bad, yet still cleared a million

Doesn't matter how well it was marketed. If people bought it, it means they didn't need SD cards.

The average tech illiterate person wouldn't know if they needed it or not. They complain about running out of space when they add their music and some actually do wish apple has expandable storage.

It wasn't just because of marketing. When the original iPhone debuted, 4, 8, and 16gb phones were unheard of. Sd cards of that size were rare and expensive. Even four years after the original iPhone other manufacturers were still limiting themselves to 4gb or less in flash memory.

Those storage levels, including the 8/16/32/64gb models, are plenty for the average consumers. That is one of the big reasons the iPhone sold in such big numbers. To simplify it as 'just marketing' is as dishonest as doing the same for Samsung.

The average consumer doesn't load their phone with music, even with the ease of use of having apples vertical integration.

I don't even have an external card installed right now. Sandisk has it. I like being able to expand my storage but gave up on keeping all my music on device when it got past 32 gigs and I wasn't even listening to everything already on it.

By the way, most people don't live on their phone like we do. Their device is a means to and end rather than an end unto itself.

My SD card fills fast with photos. The 16 gigs on my note 2 do not accommodate all my apps. Becasue of the large game files. Saying a SD card slot is useless makes no sense. I love expandable storage. Even on my PC and it is bolstered with cloud services.

But if they bought the phone, use it, and like it, it means THEY DON'T NEED SD.
