Seamlessly transferring programs & data to new Rezound??

Well, as luck would have it (and bad decisions on my part, as I still had not gotten a case for my several month old Rezound), I dropped it yesterday and gave it a nice, big ol' crack all the way diagonally across the screen. I had a clear screen guard on it but will still likely need to replace it as I fear anything (even a drop of water) getting into that crack.

I have already put a ton of programs and data (contacts, calendar, etc) on it and am wondering (since I am a bit of a newbie) what the easiest way is to transfer everything from one Rezound to another.

Currently, I sync my contacts and calendar with My Phone Explorer and I do this every day, so I am up to date. Any advice that you can offer to make this process less painful for a newbie would be much appreciated.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for a nice-looking case that does not add much weight to this already large phone, I would love to hear it!

Thanks everyone :)

Thanks for those suggestions.

Any thoughts on how to transfer from one Rezound to another?

Thanks again!

Turn off the old phone, move your SIM and SD over to the new one. When you sign into Google, all of your downloaded apps should re-install. Some of your data(wifi passwords etc) should be backed up on Google as well. Other than that you would need an app(and root access) like Titanium backup in order to backup specific apps and data.

Yikes! "root access"???? Sorry, terms like this frighten (and confuse) a newbie like myself! :)

I have a program called My Back Up Pro but have never had to use it before so am unsure about what I can actually expect it to re-install on a new device.

That will back up the apks and I think you can back up SMS messages with it. It will not backup your data however from those apps

Ok, so how would i best back up data from my apps (like notes in GNotes, Tasks in GTasks, etc)? I have a Google account but really do not use it for anything, just had to sign up for it to get my device going.

That stuff I am pretty sure you can back up with Google itself, otherwise you need to be rooted.

Could you explain (in laymen's terms) what being "rooted" means?

And is this something that a newbie should even be toying with, if they have no idea what they are doing?

Thanks :)

At this point rooting isn't going to do you a bit of good anyway(the process factory reset's the phone). So don't worry too much about it. But the long and the short of it is that rooting allows you to have full access to your phone and allows a higher caliber of app to run such as wifi tether or titanium backup.

Rooting:
For those that don?t know what rooting is, I?ll explain. Rooting allows you to act as the ?superuser? on your device. This gives you privilege to do things that the developers didn?t quite intend you to do(but most are really fun). Rooting is a harmless process, and should only take you a few minutes. If you?re jumping in without using my Unlocking guide, then please see the Preparation section above. If you plan on installing a rooted ROM you can skip this section

YOU MUST BE UNLOCKED IN ORDER TO ROOT
First you?ll need to download a custom Recovery call AmonRa. Here?s a link to it: LINK

I?m using version 3.14 as my example. Copy your newly downloaded recovery-ra-vigor-3.14-gnm.img file to your AndroidSDK folder above(like you did with Unlock_code.bin).

1) Reboot your phone into HBOOT
2) Make sure your phone is connected to the PC
3) Now open a Command Prompt and issue the following commands:
Code:
Cd \AndroidSDK\platform-tools
Fastboot flash recovery ..\recovery-ra-vigor-3.14-gnm.img
Fastboot reboot-bootloader

When your phone reboots, choose the ?Recovery? option. This will bring you into Amon Ra. Use the volume up/down keys to choose the ?Developer Menu?, and press the power button to accept. Now choose the option that says ?Install su & superuser? and click the power button. Once this is complete choose return/Reboot now and click the power button. Your phone will reboot normally.

When you?re all back up and running you still need to do one last thing. Head over to the Android Market(Play Store) and download Superuser by Chainsdd. Here?s the web link: LINK

If you?re on the ICS Leak, you?ll need SuperSU found here: LINK

Congratulations you are now rooted.

If he was on the original software that shipped with the phone when it was originally released , couldn't he just use Scotts temp root? Of course, it is highly unlikely.

Yeah if he was on the original stock ROM then temp root would still work.

Of course, the new phone would have to also be on the original stock rom for him to restore, which at this point is highly unlikely. But still, he could wait to see what software the replacement phone is on.

I will be getting a new phone within the week, but have to say that I am a bit afraid of doing more harm than good with rooting, esp. since most of what I have read here is making my head hurt :)

I would love to have the time to learn more about this stuff...being a mom of 6 year old twins and working full time does not allow much time to dabble in electronics :(

It is a painless process. Check out the stickies thread at the top of this forum. It is an excellent guide
