Searching for a new tab :)

noticed someone else posted a very similar question.. But I didnt want to hijack their thread :3

looking at getting a new tab, my xoom is quite old and my playbook is getting a bit old too. Since BBRY prolly isn't making a tablet anytime sooon Im looking at a droid or an ipad... and apple is lame so I'm looking at a droid tab.

looking at the 7"-8" range what are your favorites out there? I like the Note 8, but odds are I'm going to root it and flash a custom rom on there, so would the nexus have the best drivers available/bootloader unlock etc and hardware wise how does it stack up? Been out of the android world for a while.

Welcome from the Android side of the forums.

I would guess that either device is pretty easy to root/flash. I have a Samsung Tab 2 that was easy to root, and has a few decent ROMs available for it. I settled on SlimROM, thanks to my S3, and I was on 4.3 about a month before the announcement came that the device was getting 4.2. So for rooting/flashing ROMs, there is a definite benefit.

The only thing is with the Nexus and updates...if you have that device, you would get updates faster than say Slim or Cyanogen would.

I dont know if updates would be THAT big of a deal, since I would basically be flashing roms for days (When I had a android phone thats all I did haha) Basically as long as it has a strong graphics card and decent amount of ram for multi tasking I should be in good shape. Does any device stand out anymore when it comes to "processing and graphics"? I would think at this time a lot of the "spec war" has ended - but I have been out of the droid loop for some time.

Main uses for the device will be - emulators, streaming youtube, and taking to conferences for notes, reading etc (oh man I feel old..) , I dont actually do a ton of "gaming" on the machine (PC gamer myself), however a strong processor etc doesn't hurt for device longevity before looking at updating again.

The nexus 7 looks interesting - Just that I may be able to dual boot ubuntu onto it. (not my preferred linux distro but, still kinda cool)
