Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!

Screw it. I'm done trying.
***edit***
Ok, so I tried a couple more times. It finally went through. And I did call Verizon tech today to lodge a complaint on issues with all this.

The two tips (cache clearing and clock setting) had the Gingerbread patch downloaded and installed on my Incredible in no time flat. Thanks^2! And to think that I was considering a total wipe and Cyanogenmod. This should keep me happy until I spring for my next phone.

Ok...got the 1st update, all was well. Then the 2nd one screwed me up. So after much conversation with verizon i moved all my photos to my sd card, did a system reset. It reset to the 4.06.605.3 build. I now have the 4.08 update sitting there asking me to install.

If i install it will it work? I have 534MB in my phone memory available space.

The verizon rep said wait a few days for things to settle.

Do i need to do the recovery boot process before trying to install?

Awesome. This worked. Thanks! When I had 446MB free (302MB used) space, it failed because of low space. At 464MB free it worked. So somewhere between 446MB and 464MB free space was the difference for me. Your mileage may vary.

Now, will this fix the low space error I was constantly getting after the GB update? Time will tell.

It took me 3 tries, and three rounds of deleting, but I finally got it to work. giskard, you are much admired by the DINC community for your efforts.

Awesome, it worked for me too. Thank you so much! I had to clear out 450MB of space to get it to actually install.

I can use Google Talk and voice commands again, and that pita memory notification is gone!

Great detective work. After I removed a couple apps, and reset per your instructions, the update installed without problems. :)

Big Thanks to All who posted suggestions. Great find!

I am now up to date running 4.08.605.2 after it failed the 1st time for insufficient space!

:D

Giskard,

I created my account here to thank you for the tips and to commend you on your awesomeness. However, it turns out I am one of the odd ones. After initially getting the "low memory" warning, I found this thread, and did the following:

1) changed date & re-downloaded the 4.08 update
2) wiped the cache from the recovery interface
3) used app2sd to move all apps to SD card, I have 592MB free

Unfortunately, when I apply the update, it says "rebooting", and when the counter gets to 0, it reboots...normally. The update isn't applied, the phone then says my software is up to date, but it's 4.06.605.3.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again,

/TCP

Giskard,
Brilliant! It's been bothering me since that first Sept notification that didn't go through...but I'm at 4.08.605.2 now thanks to your help. Very cool.

Had to play around with clearing the cache and THEN switching the date a few times, but it worked and I'm seeing some nice improvements to the GB update (most noticeably, my talk-to-text now works). Thanks a lot for figuring this out. You totally made my day. Still, hope that the few HTC phones that do finally get ICS don't have to go through this mess.

Maybe I'm missing something but when I press and hold the power button I don't even have a restart option. I have power off, silent mode, vibration mode, airplane mode and mobile network that's it.

I have an HTC incredible still running 2.2 not rooted

Thx

Just wanted to add my thanks for this brilliant, easy to execute solution! Worked perfectly the first time. My phone is finally updated and deleted apps are re-installing now.

Verizon and HTC have totally embarrassed themselves with this debacle. They should hire YOU. :D

PS to Jefeo - the restart power option was installed with gingerbread (2.3.4), so you need to do that first. These instructions are for the 8mb patch that followed the gingerbread update. I had no problems installing GB, it was the 2nd update that was giving me (and others) problems.

I can get the 4.08 update to download, I can get it past the reboot screen and I can even get it to start the download. It runs up about 1/3 completed, stops, the phone just reboots, I wait for it to finish, check my software version and I'm still at 4.06. I repeated the hboot clear cache, recovery boot sequence followed by the update download / date change / tried to install at least 3 times. If I didn't take the time to clear the cache first the update would stop at rebooting after the update download. If I went the whole way from hboot back to system update - I could get to start the green arrow download then it just stops - phone restarts and back to 4.06.

Short of a system reset - is there anything else I can try. This has been the best forum that I have seen for actually getting something done. Thanks to all.:)

I also seem to be an odd man out. I was able to download and install 4.06 with no issues. 4.08 hasn't had the same experience.

I like just about everyone else had the low memory issue when first installing it, then had the no restart issue. I rebooted my phone after the no restart issue. it the said that my phone was up to date but 4.06. So after a day or 2 of searching I found the date switch workaround. After applying that it sees the update and starts the download process but it doesn't download. It just sits there with the black and grey "candycane" progress bar with no data coming to the phone. I'm in an area with good reception. I've tried restarting the phone, clearing the system cache through hroot to no avail.

Any ideas would be appreciated

I have the same thing, I don't have a restart option either.

Coincidentally, I also have S-off, CWM recovery installed and no dice on the upgrade. I can play around with the date and get it to download the update but it stops at reboot (never reboots) and then if I turn it off and go into recovery and clear the cache nothing changes, no update.

Anyone think I should uninstall CWM?

Then again if I have to remove CWM, I might as well go to CM7. Only thing keeping me back is its my wife's phone and she probably won't want to learn a new interface if I update it to CM7.

A couple of notes based on my experience:

- When the instructions say "press and hold," that means press and hold until the next screen comes up
- It takes a few seconds before the volume rockers will let you move the cursor to recovery. Some lines of stuff will display. Don't freak out.
- My DROID eye after rebooting after wiping the cache was only up for about a minute - your experience may vary.
- I found that the best way to get the update to start was to manually change the date by rolling back to 2010, and then checking for updates. It'll say that your system is up to date but if you try it again it'll be downloading.
- This morning my free phone memory space was less than 300mb and it failed. Tonight I deleted some stuff and got to 332mb. Did the wipe cache and tried again. Failed again. Deleted even more stuff and got to 372mb. This time it worked. So it seems like the magic number is between 332 and 372. Ridiculous but whatever.

Don't know why it was so important for me to get this update but it sure was bothering me all day.

I followed the directions to wipe the cache that were posted by giskard, but it was your post that made the difference. I had a similar experience when trying to force the update, so I was glad to see your more detailed information about what could happen.

For example, after wiping the cache, and rebooting, the red eye only hung around for a minute and I could not force the update. After deleting some more of my larger (but not too essential apps like Shopper and Reader) and rolling the date back, I was able to force the update, following your direcitons just as you said. This time, after rebooting, the red eye hung around for at least 5 minutes. For me, it was wiping the cache AND rolling the date back one year that worked for me. I am now running Gingerbread, so thank you very, very much!

I will also say, as many others have said, that this is most likely my last HTC phone as the limitation on application data is one of the most stupid limitations I have ever come across in phone design. When my contract is up next year, I will be looking at a Google phone. I thought Sense was the best overlay, but any carrier alteration of the operating system introduces needless complexity which inevitably operates to delay or screw up future updates, as this latest on again-off again Gingerbread update for the Droid Incredible has shown. I have lost my patience with carrier software overlays and update drama in general.

I got a notification for one big update to 4.08.605.2 (never got a 4.06 update) that was around 87 MB this morning. After removing a few apps, clearing the cache as instructed above, and changing the date to get the notification again, it finally installed and rebooted.

I'm sure I'll start noticing the little issues that others have posted about, but in the meantime my phone is noticeably faster. Thanks everyone for the help.
