Second S5 defective

Three weeks ago had to get a replacement S5 because of a bad microphone. Last night, this new S5 which has been working fine, started acting up. I turned off the screen via the power key and couldn't get the screen back on. When I pressed the power or home button the screen would quickly blink a greenish rectangle then go dark again. The captive buttons light fine, the phone was functioning because I could hear texts and stuff come through. On a battery pull, it would boot up but no logo or screen. Just the green flash. I was able to get it to come back on after about an hour with repeated light taps of the phone. But after a few minutes screen would crap out again. But since the last tapping of the back it's been working for about ten hours now. I guess the screen has a slight short somewhere. Tmobile over nighted another S5 free of charge even though it's 6 months old. Much easier then dealing with Samsung directly.

Glad that T-Mobile stepped up to the plate for you. But that is disturbing. Watch that replacement like a hawk.

Yeah, second one in six months. Never had a problem with previous Samsung's. The replacement will be here tomorrow. This S5 hasn't had the screen problem happen again since last night. But I'm going to still swap it out. I'm sure it will blank out again eventually...

Cheap Korean crap. I like my S5 but I seriously want to smash it on the ground when I go running because the headphone jack sucks and gives me nothing but static. I've tried 2 different kinds of headphones so I know it's not the headphones that are the problem.

I hear ya. I really like the phone when it's working properly,. but if the third one gets defective I'll jump to a different brand. The S2 and S3 I had never gave me problems. It's getting pretty annoying.

I'm on my 3rd s5, all from 06/14. The last one has been the best... SO FAR.... When I had a s4,i went thru 7 in a year and a half. I just like samsung I guess.

There is nothing cheap about Samsung devices. Also in south Korea they are so much more technologically advanced than we are in the West.

As for your headphones, try a pair with three lines on the jack instead of two. Does it make any difference?

What do you mean by 3 lines on the jack? You have my interest peaked.

Damn, 7 S4s . My S3 was a rock. I'm hoping I just had crappy luck with my first two. What was defective on your previous S5s?

Yes three lines on the Jack. On my S4 out of the box only headphones with three lines on the Jack worked. Those with two lines would give me static. At the time I didn't realise it was fault I just thought that was how it was designed. It wasn't until after it got an update and suddenly started working with all types of headphones that I realised it was a fault. My S5 worked with all types of headphones out of the box. Then about a month ago I was listening to some music with a pair of headphones with two lines on the Jack and I heard this popping sound and suddenly the sound went. After some investigation I discovered that once again only headphones with three rings on the Jack would work. I didn't want to go through the hassle of resetting the phone or returning it so I carried on. Then last week it spontaneously resolved itself and all headphones work in the Jack again. I don't know if your issue is the same. Just thought it was something you could try.

a 3 line jack

Ground or the "shell" is line 1 (by definition only for this example)

line 2 is the left/right audio
line 3 is the right/left audio

a 2 wire jack contains only the Ground or shell and a single wire that shorts both the left and right speakers lead together.
That upsets the audio amplifiers outputs immensely thus generating a lot of noise.

So what are some good headphones with 3 line jacks? I can't seem to find anything searching online. Maybe I'm not searching right.

Skip the headphone jack all together and get a good quality Bluetooth headphones. I Mountain bike and I was getting tired of the damn wire dangling around and getting caught on everything so I went to Bestbuy and bought a pair of JayBird BlueBuds and have never been happier. They are not bulky or even heavy and the battery life is damn good on them. Right after my ride I plug them in to charge and they are ready to go for my next ride. These are the ones I got: JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Earbud Headphones Black BBX1MB - Best Buy

Oh, and they have a mic in them so you can use them as handsfree while on the go as well and talk on the phone with them.

I also had a mic go out on my first one. Maybe there is some intermittent manufacturing flaw, or something, with the microphones.

Good suggestion, brah. I just picked a pair of these up tonight and they are sick! I love being able to adjust volume and skip songs with then instead of pulling the phone out. I run with my dog so between having gloves on when it's cold and holding the leash, messing with the phone is super annoying when I'm trying to get a workout in. I haven't gone on a run with them yet but the sound quality is great and these are very well built. I was a little hesitant with the price. I have no problem spending money on good headphones but I assumed that most of the money was going toward the fact that they were Bluetooth instead of sound quality. Not true with these. Sound quality is top notch.

Ooh does the Jay bud remote work with the S5?

I've got some samsung Bluetooth ones and the remote works but I'd prefer a higher quality pair. Think I'll pick up a pair of these.

Yeah, it works perfectly. These headphones are awesome.

Usually any wired headset that has some kind of inline control or mic on its cord will have the third ring. ETA: The third ring completes the circuit needed by the inline feature.

Quality and prices vary widely. I've been happy with Skull Candy because they sound good and hold up well. They also generally use a flat ribbon-form cord which is less prone to tangle. It still does snag, though!

I believe he's referring to the insulators on the actual jack - the bands between the metal. Edit. Im Too slow :)
